yes, it's another one of these threads...

I need to pick up a laptop for my ma - she'll be mainly sending emails and surfing the web. Nothing more complex than that.

The Dell Inspiron 1300 seems good value at EUR479 incl. VAT and shipping (although when I click on it it says EUR612!). Does anyone know if they're reliable machines? Is Dell tech support any good?

I notice that Tesco are doing laptops for about EUR700, but can't imagine buying a laptop in the same shop that I buy my spuds. I presume if there's a problem you'd have to deal with a third party, which sound skinda messy.

Are there any other sources I should be checking out?

    Cheers.

    R

    DONT BUY DELL!

im saying after my €4k laptop died (as well as three previous issues with them )
    try toshiba, or hewlett packard
also try www.komplett.ie as they are pretty cheap

"(although when I click on it it says EUR612!)."

Flick down through everything you're ordering and you'll notice dell have added their year parts and labour warranty which adds that extra money. Select "None" and you'll be back to 475.

I ordered one of these laptops and i use it for browsing/mail, its grand.

Post on the laptops forum for a more balanced view.

TBH, you will hear horror stories about all makes and models of laptops.

With Dell you get what you pay for. You simply cannot beat them on price. Bearing that in mind, some sacrifices have to be made.
