Ordered Sky+

Finally ordered sky + last night and got an install date of 24th May. My question is whether anyone in Cork has had this installed through calling sky directly, whether the installer gives you an idea on when they will be there before hand (as they do in the UK) or whether i need to be there the full day.

    Cheers

Installer usually phones on the morning of the install and will usually give you a 3-4 hour slot, so basically morning or afternoon.

Thanks for the info guys. Now I just need to make sure they don't try and sting me for an installation fee as it is free installation. This is not a slur on DMC as I am certain it was not them that installed my original "free installation" of sky and charged me 30 quid for the installation. Not knowing any better at the time I handed over the cash  - you live and learn.

YOu should read the small print. Some installs are chargeable if install takes longer than it should, or extra cabling etc.

What is considered standard install though is a bit vague, though I think timewise, the installers need to be in and out within 45 mins?

If they are not then it would be their own fault, the route for the wires are already there, the phone lines are set up and the dish installed, they have to change the lnb and run a new wire to the bedroom, switch the boxes around (the old one up to the bedroom and the sky+ into the living room) and that hopefully will be pretty much that.

of course that is if all goes well - ;)

Just been on the phone to the muppets at sky as they had the wrong mobile number for my contact, some eedjit had 2 down at the front instead of 0...must be from the original contract. Anyhoo - they changed it but can't change the order and can't contact the sub-contractor until the day of the install - and then i have to call sky to tell them to contact them again on the day of the install....what a joke.

Ah well i will report next week on how it goes....fingers crossed...

Sorry, was referring to why you might have got charged the first time.

Really though, somebody on the phone should have said to you that there may be an extra fee if job takes too long or whatever.

ah, no. first time was a bit different, can't remember where but signed up with some local installer, big sign, installation free. he turned up with the guys who actually did the job and at the end said "oh and there is a 25 charge just for the lads you know" - never went through sky at all for that one, even the card was sent to the installer.

Talking of which, I had to replace the lnb after about a year and a half and if that was a new lnb they had stuck up there then i am a monkeys smelly bits! :D

Well, an LNB can die anytime, though admittedly, usually they last for around 3-10 years.

I've seen some die after a few weeks, and even a few that died within 24 hours (all of which were either Skyware or Thomson LNB's. The old Grundigs were very reliable, and most are still working)!

Is there anyway to get hold of SKY+ for a discount if you are already an existing customer on a top tier package?
Or are all the deals and special offers for new customers only?

I am a current customer and it cost 149 euro for sky + installation. That is with multi room so you are paying another 15 euro each month. But i will cancel that after the year and stick my uk card in the spare box then. I was on top tier too so I cancelled movies to compensate the 15 euro a bit, coz to be honest, it is pure pish!

So the installer gave me a call yesterday afternoon and i got the sky + installed early, by yesterday evening I had sky+ and all it's lovely wee recording facilities enabled.

The install was reasonably quick and I can have no complaints about the installer.

Now I just need to tidy up all the fecking cables to keep the better half happy. And come up with a solution to the black wire running from the dish down the front of the house, the top part i can paint by painting the house, but i will need to cover up the wire on the brick work with something else....time for the thinking hat!:)

I thought Sky+ was free every month(as opposed to €15 extra) if you had both the sports and movie channels. Is this still the case I'm thinking about getting it, how much do they charge for the installation and the equipment?

The recording facility is free if you subscribe to the 6 mix's and 2 or more premium channels. Standard installation is free but you must buy the box. If you are an existing customer the price is €299. If you are a new customer the price is €149.

Any idea what a non standard installation costs(if there is such a thing)? I know very little about Sky+ but tell me this, when you say that the recording facility is free is there something else that you have to pay for?

Yes your subscription! a non standard installation is something like this...more than 10 metres of phoneline required to connect the box to the phone, more than a 20 metre run of coax from the dish to the box, in your case you will require 2 runs. and a dish installation on top of a 2 story chimney or gable brackets required either. Those are the most common reasons for a non standard installation.

I thought the subscription was free(to Sky+) if you had the movie and sports channels. I wasn't saying that you wouldn't have to keep paying the existing €62 or whatever it is for the actual channel package that you already have I was refering to the extra €15 that sky+ costs if you don't have both the movie and sport channels.

As you have all 4 premium channel packages, you will not have to pay the additional €15 to use the Sky+ features.

You don't need all 6 mixes, just the 2 premium channels. I have 4 mixes plus Sky Movies (no Sports) and don't pay the €15 extra.
