It would be nice to see the ex-pats winning a game, particularly against this opposition.

It will be interesting to see alright, but I still see the Rossies winning by about 15 points+. Do New York have anyone of note playing for them? Any former county stars from this side of the Atlantic?

Cant real see the Rossies being beaten, although in saying that no one knows a lot about New York, so a shock could be on the cards.

That harsh about the Rossies - they won 5 games in the league this year - maybe they were unlucky no getting 2nd - Donegal were by far the better team and limerick pipped Ros to 2nd

last year they were without leadership - the county board was in a mess and events like that seeped onto the field - sure there was talk of them not competing in the championship last year - no wonder they had a bad year

I think its a turn around this year -playing well and the county board have been audited and the accounts are a bit better.

The game V New York -

New York will be strong at home because they can call up players that normally wouldnt travel to Ireland - because of visa issues so they will field a strong team and they will be hungry aswell to get a win on home soil, its prob their best change since Leitrim 2 years ago

They will also be better able to cope with the rock hard field.

a Roscommon win but not by much - 9-1 with PP might be worth a €5

I've tipped the Rossies for a good run this year (kiss of death!)

Apparently 5000, yes 5000 have travelled to this. I know 400 have travelled from my local area (from a population of 3000 ! )

ya Roscommon won in the end. they were by far the stronger team in the first half dominating the game. In the second half New York pulled back and it took Ros 20 minutes to score. New York pulled back to a point then hit the post. Roscommon then scored their first point of the second half. New York had a player sent off and Ger Heneghan scored the penalty to secure the win.
However it was a very unconvincing win. Ros will spend the next week training in the Catscill mountains.

And yes there was huge support there. im not quite sure it reached 5000 but nevertheless its still a huge crowd from a relatively small county.

The Rossies came through but not without a scare according to the report on the Sunday Game, the reporter didnt seem to think the Rossies were up to much at all.

That is not looking good for Ros.New York had a respectable scoreline. Its hard to surmise why Roscommon would have trouble putting New York away seeing as Roscommon have beaten teams like Kildare in 2004 and play a lot more gaelic football than New York. The reviews/previews for this match said that it was the most pointless fixture of the championship.

I think these critics will shut up if teams are travelling over and nearly losing to this New York side. The consensus is that a game against New York is just a formality but I don't agree with this. These guys can play football. It would be interesting to see a club side play New York.It would be a v tight game.

New York at home can field all their exiles, who can't travel to Ireland for obvious reasons, so it is a tricky fixture now.

Roscommon will be put through a pretty tough time in The Catskills over the next couple of weeks.

Trust me, a determined and dogged Roscommon team (a la 1980's) is a tough team to beat.
If they start pulling in the same direction for the first time in 15 years, they'll give any team in the country a run for their money.

in fairness, when Roscommon got going in 2003, 2001 and 1998 they were a match for most teams

this Roscommon team is too young, and lacks the physical traits that many of the successful teams in the past had.

it'll take a few years, but we'll be back up amongst the top teams before long
