anybody know what the story is with compulsory insurance? i booked a holiday with budget travel and did pick their insurance deal which is a crazy 37 euro each. they are saying that i must show that we all have travel insurance and must show proof of such when we collect our tickets? whats that story with that,i thought ttravel insurance was optional.

also if i must take out insurance ,any body know of a cheap place to get it,its for 7 days in the sun

    thanks

Didnt think it was compulsory myself. If you want to sort it out yourself I can recommend www.justcover.ie, Ive used them before and they have been very reasonable.

yeah it is compulsory with budgettravel. its a disgrace,i mean what difference is it them whether i have travel insurance or not? i have to show them documentary proof that we all have insurance when i collect the tickets. their own insurance is a rip off 37 euro!

    Put it another way...

I'm on holidays in Tenerife with Budget Travel. I'm hit by a car 2 days before we go home, end up in hospital for a week, meaning I have to stay later than planned, missing my flight. I need a row of seats on a flight home because my leg is in plaster and all the charters are full.

If I have travel insurance, my insurers pick up the tab for the hospital stay, the repatriation flights etc.

If I didn't bother taking out travel insurance, who is going to pay for the hospital bill, flights home etc... not Budget Travel or their rep. They'll certainly come & pay you the odd visit in hospital, but they're not responsible to get you home. They won't lend you money or bail you out... it's not up to them.

Just go & take out an insurance policy. www.vhi.ie, www.123.ie, www.aon.ie or www.getcover.ie all arrange it for you... and you can get single trip cover from €12 for a week & €23 for 2 weeks.

just be carefull that you read small print if you get a policy from justcover/getcover.ie. i used them for holiday cover a few months ago- thought they were great as it was so cheap, was buying ins again with them last week and happened to read terms and conditions- the list of things that exemp you from being able to make a claim is endless

links already gone up for vhi but was going to suggest if you and whoevers travelling with you have medical insurance with VHI, BUPA etc to give them a call and check out what their coverage abroad is like. I know VHI do some sort of package, can't remember what it is as it wasn't suitable for an extended trip so didn't get it.

    Damoken,
who did you get your insurance with in the end. How long was your extended trip and where did you go

got it with Trailfinders in the end as I was travelling with them. Trip was 2.5 months starting in New Zealand and coming back over land through Singapore flying home from Bangkok eventually. Excellent trip and thankfully didn't need to avail of the insurance, definitely worth getting though. The amount of people I met especially in Thailand hopping around on crutches, arms in slings or lot of stitches due to scooter crashes was unreal! Also activities in New Zealand are not what you would normally consider sedate. Insurance though covered most stuff including bungy jumps I think, didn't bother with the optional extra for sky dives as if something went wrong I don't think I'd be sitting in some hospital

Some Trade Unions do special deals with insurance companies. Mine is €70 per year for all the family and unlimited travel (with Cornmarket).

I got mine with VHI (I have health insurance with them too)... €69 for Wifey and I.

I wouldn't cross the road with Budget, they're terrible. I hope you've no problems when you get there. The reps only want to know you when you're buying trips from them.

Cheers Damoken, I am thinking of going with Trailfinders as well, bought my ticket with them so it is just as handy. Going for 8 months or until the money runs out so €379 is the price I will have to pay for piece of mind:(

    No
Along with the links above, you could also try
    www.acetravelinsurance.ie

I've used them and they are far cheaper then the others for as good as the same cover.
Haven't needed to call on them yet so i've no idea of how good the end result is :p
They are the same company as the one AIB uses except AIB charges way more for it!

A good point to bear in mind is that while they may be the same company, it doesn't mean they are the same policies, or the same amount of cover.

Just checking, if you include the 10% discount AIB are currently running, they are only slightly dearer than ACE and have some tiny increased benefits.
Same company underwrites both of the policys.
Makes a change from last year when AIB was over 30% dearer for
    the same policy
So if the 10% online discount stays, they are practically the same.

you can tell budget travel that you have holiday cover with your life insurance plan, then get a comprehensive single trip cover from blue insurance (about 34 euro)

the cheapest for euro travel atm is top travel at 10 euro for 14 days.
