I say this every time I know, but I have to share the pleasure I get from being handed the NCT cert first time out.

The car's 22 years old, used every day and just today flew through the test first time needing nothing. (Obviously I maintain it from one NCT to the next.) NCT guy commented on its tidy condition.

Congratulations! ALWAYS a great feeling. :)

What car were you getting NCT'd by the way?

Yeah I got the same comments when I took in an admittedley much younger '94 C200 !

The guy couldn't believe the emissions and PPM's were so low, hardly on the scale at all ! The car hgas nver used a drop of oil in 115,000 miles. Regular oil changes obviously !

Also the shock/suspension/steering showed no wear or whatever. I did change the track rod ends and tightened the wheel bearings !

I was delighted and of course told eveyone who'd listen !

Following week the head gasket went !!

Now I'm up to my t1ts in nuts n' bolts ...............and no time to do it !

Ah well should be on the road by Saturday :D

Good 123's are hard to find at decent money !

i brought in my 94 Vectra at 229,000 miles and it walked thru. cleaner on the emissions this time than 2 years ago.

Brought in the Fiat 850 in 2000 when it was 29 years old. It was a wet morning so turned on the lights and blew a dipped bulb. The 6 guys at the centre surrounded it for the test ,when I got called in, the tester told me he didn't want to fail it on an advisory cos he couldn't check the focus on the right beam so he checked the left twice and said the computer won't know any different:D

The Mercedes is a bit of a 'Christine' - steering and brakes show better than 2years ago, though I have done a bit of work with both.

Here's hoping nothing goes wrong, for all my congratulating the car. 171k miles and counting...

MercMad, did you ever get a decent w123 after?

    Typical...

Been hearing a squeak squeak noise for the last couple of days. Got out of the car today and had a quick run around checking wheels for heat - sure enough the nearside rear was piping hot. Must be a caliper seized and the disk is a bit rough looking. That's my job for tomorrow...

I was wondering if you can still get an NCT done on an NCT-exempt classic. Just as a cheap way of getting everything checked / develop a fix-it list. Anyone know?

You can indeed - I haven't done it but know people who have.

Gar81, cars are tested according to the standards applicable at the time of manufacture, so if your Escort is in reasonable order it should be OK. If the brakes are shot and it's belching black smoke that's a different story.

Aren't emissions based on the levels for year of manufacture?, when I tested the 850, it was exempt from emissions testing but the tester was curious to see if it would pass so he checked it anyway.
