Liberty said today it planned to launch VoIP, or internet telephone, services in Ireland later this year

NTL/Chorus are approaching 600,000 customers nationwide now. No mention of how many bb customers.

They never had VOIP before. It was voice over cable when NTL offered their own seervice, it worked like POTS and was not over IP.

They have been saying they will introduce VOIP since 2002.

Total broadband customers for the company are now 32,700, out of a possible 238,700 homes which can currently get a broadband connection. This translates to a jump of 30pc on the previous quarter and a total customer takeup of just over 13pc

If it was POTS port on a DOCSIS cable modem, then it is/was VOIP really...

It used the Packet Cable standard which isn't related to VOIP

It did no such thing....it was the old tellabs gear - packet cable is a DOCSIS standard....it used V.35.....now, now BK dont argue :)

It could actually do ISDN as well and some versions had an ethernet port where you could get fairly moderate speeds by today's standards.

So is Liberty going to be the mysterious BB + phone for €25 a month then. God knows what has taken them so long.

yeah it was good gear for it's time really...it was known as "cableSpan" - very expessive though (had back up battery and a pile of electronic and power gizmos inside) and it was thwe size of a small radiator! Was well past end of life when they were all (needlessly) ripped out of D.24. http://www.tellabs.com/news/2001/nr112801.shtml

i wonder what the backup battery was about... whenever there was a power cut the phone would go too!
