I thought the contivity was a firewall product....
Is this for a home setup?
You "should" be able to swap the nortel for the netgear depending on the provider and the settings you are using.
The two connected (using the same one line) will not improve internet speed-almost definetly.

yeah according to websites i searched its a router and firewall, can i not just use netgear router and software for firewall? we connect to an organisation intranet, our emails /databases/software are on servers in uk,does this client-server scenario make a difference?

    Yes a big difference.
You are dealing with a corporate network-are you in IT and responsible for the network as a whole?
If not then I would not recommend changing anything without first clearing it with the people who are responsible for your network.
There may be custom settings on the Nortel box-it appears to be setting up a VPN connection to the head offices in the UK and the netgear may not support this.....and even if it does you will need to migrate a whole host of setting off of the Nortel box to the Netgear.
I notice you have a question on VOIP as well. Also something you should first clear with the responsible people as modifing the network setup you currently have could seriously feck up your network-especially if you havent gotten that much experience in dealing with this kind of work.
I dont think posting questions which may have serious implications for a corporate environment on fora such as these is good practice. Especially if you are not over the whole network. Get advise from the admin or get a consultant in.
