Im new to the game but like to think im au fait with the rules, however there was a major row at a home game last night and the ruling i gave was overruled by all 6 other players. Situation was as follows:

Player B was big blind and got busted out so button moves to Player A and Player C is BB on his own, correct???

Next hand Player C gets knocked out and the other players argue that button should move to Player B's now empty seat and that Player D is BB on his own. I argue that button should move to Player C's now empty seat and that Player D is Sb and Player E is BB. Who is correct?

I'm afraid that your friends were correct, Played D has to post his BB before he posts his SB. If he doesn't post his BB and only posts his SB he has a chip advantage for that round.

    What was the seating arrangement?
Did it go A to E in a clockwise direction?

    Yes, correct.

Player D should be BB and there is no SB (player C, but he's gone). The button is on player B (also dead).

Next hand button on player C, player D SB and player E BB.

These rules are there to make sure no one skips the BB and no one is BB twice in a row. The button and SB can be 'dead', but not the BB. If there would be a dead BB the next player in line is BB instead.
