About 18 months ago I bought the kit to put together a htpc. I followed Jarod Wilsons guide (probably biting off more than I could chew at the time) to install mythtv on red hat fedora core.

Anyways, I gave it a bash again last weekend with ubuntu and some nice apt-get repositories. Couldn't have been easier. I now have a fully functional htpc with a fully functional linux distro in the background. Lovely. :D

Do you want to share the details of your machine? I found it very difficult to get up and running (AMD 64, ubuntu 5.0.4, pvr 350, myth .18) but once done, rock solid and seriously stable. Must give the ubuntu guys credit though, one very solid distro and really the way Linux needs to go to get better adoption on the desktop.

Upgraded to Myth .19 last week, commerical detection now working nearly perfect for me on most channels. Very sweet!

What features would I loose / gain from moving from MCE to MYTHTV?

How much knowledge of linus do you need to get it going ( as I have none ) although im quite handy with MS OS's.

    - Infact thinking about , I dont want to have to prgram in the 100+ channels on NTL digital ever again , as I did it tooooo many times with MCE.

    Hi folks

built mythTv on FC4 a couple of weeks ago and still having problems with the EPG. downloaded file successfully from Radio times with XMLTV and it appeared to install successfully with mythfilldatabase, problem is EPG just shows Unknown for each channel and no schedule.
I have checked MySQL and the channel & program table do contain the relevant data but it looks like the FreqID column in channel is set to NULL for each station so I am guessing this is the problem? Anyone come across this or resolved this previously? Can ?I just put in the MHZ values from the NTL channel list?

    TC:confused:

If you have no experience of Linux, then don't go near MythTV, it can be a very tricky setup, certainly much more difficult then MCE.

If your interested you could always install Linux in a separate partition and dual boot the machine with MCE. This would be a good way to learn Linux and MythTV without giving up MCE.

Ubuntu would be a good easy Linux distro to start with.

Easiest thing to do is to install mythweb and set the FreqIDs to match mine from the link below. This is assuming you're on NTL dublin.
