    Whilst broswing Komplett.ie, I found this: http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=319610

Its a small RC plane for €29 and I'm wondering: has anyone used anything like it, and is it any good? Esp as most "beginner" planes cost a few hundred.

If you are thinking of the beginner planes we fly - it is a toy plane comparable with the rubber band engine models we had as kids, but with a small electric powered propeller. :p
Their description is appropriate - suits age 8. It will fly down the garden - yes, - back again too.

There is a good reason why we pay €70 - €100 for a plane. It is what planes cost. (airplanes that can fly the way we want) . There are plastic toys for less €€€ - but we don't buy them because they would go backwards in an average Irish breeze . The toys are made of a plastic (same stuff as a burger carton) which breaks very easily. Then you throw the toy planes away. Nothing in the box is recyclable in future models.

Here is what my ten year old son is flying.....
VIDEO of Green Hobby plane that cost €50 in sale not including radio, but this was a kit (to be built) and might have cost €20 more, if it was pre-built. These class of model aircraft would be repairable when a bad landing causes damage. So we can crash land them 3, 4, more times and still repair them to fly again. When the plane dies (in the end) or we retire it because it's full of glue, we pull the radio and power gear out and put it into our next new airframe.

The toy plane you are looking at is intended to have a performance somewhat like this VIDEO of "parkfly" Fokker model but with a weaker engine - approx half the power of the one in the video, power adequate for continental climate like US or Spain - dead calm wind. The one in the video is in a force 2 which is unusually calm for Ireland, and represents the minimum plane-power-speed, below which we fly them indoors in a hall.

If the second video flies good enough for you, then the one you're asking about is ok for still evenings. €30 is not much to use up over a week or two. Many model fliers, myself included, take the view that €30 is a good % of the budget for a better plane they plan to fly for a year or longer.

You can chack out what the average kids at a local model flying club are flying here Dublin Kestrel Model Flying Club kids pics
But generally the adults prefer bigger faster stuff like these Kestrel gallery with pics of other models or these more pics of typical models at a club

So I guess it depends on what you want. (and are willing to spend on your hobby-enjoyment). You can stick a toe in the water with the toy stuff, or jump in with the bigger stuff. :D

You should check the local hobby shops or websites, they are some pretty reasonably priced RTF planes out there. Parkzone for example sell a nice trainer like model called the decathlon, and also a mustang. These models are in the price range of about 125 euro but come with everything to fly and are made of beter material than the flying burgar cartons that are for sale. They can also be upgraded with better electrics as the flyer progress. Possibly a good place to start if money is an issue.:)

My website has a page on what works, and a page with suggestions for getting started in RC flying model planes. You might find it useful .
