I bought a ticket for my friend before, spelled her name wrong, to get the name changed on the ticket was goin to cost €292 (€25 for name change + fair difference) Needless to say she got a flight with another carrier! :D

I'd say its because once people have gotten to that stage they tend to be quite desperate and often willing to pay over-the-odds.

Make sure your freind claims back the tax & airport charges as if the ticket is not used Ryain Air does not have to pay them. You cant clame back the flight cost probably only €20 but they make millions by not telling people they can calme the charges back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,378 ✭✭✭✭jimmycrackcorm

Probably cheaper to get a new flight.

What do you have to do to get the taxes back?

Its to stop ticket touting. As amazing as it may seem this goes on in some countries.

I've had my name mis-spelt on a ticket before. I just left it as is. Unless your already flagged to begin with they don't bother if the names almost match up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,984 ✭✭✭✭Lump

Yea, i thought it a bit strange that you owned up to a slight miss-spelling. I doubt the person would even notice, considering they're on 12 hour shifts and check in 1000's of people.

It's there on their website. How do they "not tell" you?

They now charge you an "administration fee" for claiming the charges back which cancels out any refund you are due...

"All Ryanair fares are fully changeable flight/dates/times/routes and names (up to 4 hours prior to original flight departure) however fares, fees or charges are non-refundable. Government taxes may be refunded. Ryanair apply an administration charge per person for tax refund requests. If the refund amount due to the customer is less than the applicable refund administration charge then no refund will be made. Tax refund requests must be made within one month from the booked travel date."

Well, it's not that recent. And it depends on the fare you've paid whether or not it cancels out what you are due back.

you werent going in the first place.

    whats the problem?

maybe you should have read all the documentation that comes with the ticket.
    its right there.

maybe you should learn more about purchasing tickets?

why would they care? ticketmaster dont seem to give a damn? they sell the ticket who cares who uses it? if the airline think it is worth a lot why not just charge more in the first place?

I can just see scum outside dublin airport, "anyone buying or selling a dublin to london!?"

well, im sure security would have a problem with a start.

i think theres a big difference between people going to another country, and someone going to a gig in the RDS.

Ryanair and Aer Lingus will fix spelling mistakes for free. Totally different names, they charge for.

    Well the punters care !

How would you like if the scum bought up all the cheap fares and then tried to fleece you for them ?

just another money racket i presume

It wasn't always like that. Back in the mid-nineties I was living in London with four or five other Cork lads and we were constantly using each other's tickets. This was back in the early days of RyanAir, when you were lucky if the plane even had "RyanAir" written on it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,984 ✭✭✭✭Lump

TBH, I don't think there'd be such a thing as ticket Touts for flights would there?

Anytime I checked it cancelled it or almost cancelled it out. You only get the taxes back and they usually come to about €20. The admin fee is about the same I think.

There was an article on Bruce Schneier's website about this only a few weeks ago. His theory on this is that the airlines use named tickets for revenue protection and not security.

If I take your ticket, I still have to show my passport before I can fly so there's no security risk.

Yes but I doubt the airport has the facility to run a check on a passport that shows up 10 minutes before a flight, whereas if the flight is booked days/weeks in advance, they do.

Still cheaper than AerLingus at 70 yoyo so not really a rip off specific to Ryanair. We had an issue in work where a temp organised all our flights with her name on them all, wasnt even picked up by Aer Lingus that this lady was flying on the sae flight 4 times...great :)

Unless I'm wrong you can walk up to the Aer Lingus (for example) desk and buy a ticket for a flight the same day. They have the same length of time to do a passport check as someone using another person's ticket.

You see, this is one of the reasons I love Ryanair. They charge idiots more so the rest of us can fly cheaper :)

i just got a flight from dublin to berlin for €60. everything included, even insurance. not bad considering it would cost almost the same for a return journey from dublin to kerry by train.
