I am planning to build a house in the garden of my parents house, its along side road and has its own entrance. Just wondering has anyone else done this as need advice on signing over site, planning permission, architects etc! Also how long should it take to completion, any words of wisdom will be greatly appreciated.

Before you do anything and go to the expense of signing over the site or drawing up plans, arrange a meeting with a planner at your local council council.

Explain what you are looking to do, what sort of house you are looking to build etc and see what they think. This costs nothing and the information you get here (good or bad) will stand you in good stead..

After that, your family solicitor should be able to organise signing across the site although you could apply for planning prior to doing this.

As regards the timeframe, it's a case of how long is a piece of string as there are so many factors..
    - how quick you get planning permission
    - indirect or direct labour
    - what type/size of house etc

Anyway, best of luck. Keep us informed on how you get on....
