rumours of $250 are doing the rounds -- but thats only rumours... and realistically how soon could we see it in Europe? The PS3 will launch in November - and i reckon that Nintendo will try and cash in on the Christmas rush by launching a week or 2 before the PS3.

A price point of 200 euro would be amazingly good, but I'm imagining it will be 250

EB in the states are taking deposits based on a selling price of $129.99, but that is subject to change.

They couldn't possibly sell it that cheaply ... could they??? :p

I'd like to think €150 (as Nintendo indicated that it would be a price point lower than its rivals, the PS3 and XBOX 360), but lest I forget, this is treasure Ireland and I can't see it going for less than €250.

I'd get two at that price :D; but seriously, selling for less than the DS? Don't think so, and before you say 'price drop', the DSLite will only start selling the June at the above price, it won't drop again until after Christmas.

Also, while Nintendo will sell cheap, they'll also follow their time honour system of never selling hardware at a loss, I'm sure.

its a pity there will be absolutely zero use for the gamecube after with the compatability thing. I've been trying to think what i can do with it.

maybe give it to a younger relative to introduce them to gaming :D, I'll probably do something like that myself..

I'll naturally keep my NES and N64, I mean, even if the games are available on the VC it's not the same. Maybe keep your GC until it becomes retro :D

it'll most likely be €250 and up, the price comparison to the states is strange in that we always pay as much in euros as they pay in dolars, i.e. even though $250 is €198 we'll probably pay €250 at least, i can see it being a problem as for an extra €50 you can get a core 360 and upgrade it later, seems very dodgy from nintendo but then traditionally the european market has never really mattered to nintendo, they've treated us the worst of the three main markets despite being almost as big as the states.

    From Kotaku
Miyamoto said that the price and date will likely be announced before the Tokyo Game Show

The TGS is the 22nd to 24th of September, so sometime in the next 4 and a half months we'll know price and release date

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,450 ✭✭✭dimerocks

the rumours are they decided not to announce the price because of the huge cost of the PS3 and are going to up theirs. I hope they don't.

Well they'll have to sell for less than the Core 360; which most will expect to drop in price by November... otherwise their whole cheap and chearful tactic will be a failure... I hope they don't up the price any more than they need to but I doubt they would have been pitching it for any less than 200 regardless of the others; frankly I'd say that rumour is rubbish, everyone knew the PS3 was going to be more expensive than the 360, Sony themselves have been warning people that it wasn't going to be cheap for a long while

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,450 ✭✭✭dimerocks

yeah your probably right. They price drop of the 360 will probably play a big part.

hmm... has backwards compatiblity been deffo confirmed? with teo versions of zelda launching it seems dodgy... probs just one has the cool controller features and the other doesnt, but still - how will we play gamecube games on the wii? what about a pad? and will my ntsc resi4 (which i play with freeloader) work on my eu wii? so many questions I need answering from the wii!

The Wii has Gamecube controller ports built in, so games should play exactly the same. With reports generally being that the Wii processor architecture is identical to the cube, I assume it'll be 100% compatibility and none of the emulation issues the 360 has. As for freeloader and the like, no idea.

So does anyone have a clearer picture on when the Wii is out?, are we still talking November or are we (as I hope) looking at August/September?.

Are smyth's taking preorders yet? I remember preording my 360 when it was annouced last year-the girl looked at me like I had four heads :D

Next visit to smyth's will involve two preorders.... ps3 and wii. *hopefull*

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,480 ✭✭✭projectmayhem

the ds lite is coming at about $129 so i'd say the wii will be about $239, because the journo's were saying $150 is too much, but $129 is great...

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,631 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

129 would be a steal. And I wouldn't put it past Nintendo to release it at that price. I'd say R&D for the console was quite low and the parts are dirt cheap. If developement of the controller wasn't too costly it could well be that price. Might preorder a PS3 and sell it for twice the price to desperate parents when the unavoidable chrimbo shortage arrives.

there's being opportunistic, and then there's offloading overpriced crap to people who are too clueless to know any better...

    i'm in:p

It's an overclocked GameCube with a few widgets thrown in, and the fancy ass remote. It's actually pretty cheap to manufacture, I'd grumble at forking over anything substantial over 150euro to be quite honest, maybe a bit more for a game pack or two. Irregardless, I'm still going to pre-order one, but I'm far more interested in how much they may try to charge (if at all) for the back-catalogue access, and if it will be graduated.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,639 ✭✭✭Laguna

There's bound to be some fee for the back catalogue of old games, even if it is a monthly/yearly subscription, I really, really can't see them giving away their intellectual property for free. Besides, whilst it's a nice feature that we'll be able to have access to the great Nintendo games of yesteryear, I think the whole point of the any new console is to experience the new games and content.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,631 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

I heard it's something like 5-2 dollars for NES/8-bit, 5-10 for Snes/16-bit and around 15 for an N64 game. A little steep for some of the older games considering an N64 game will possibly cost 5 on ebay. They also aren't releasing everything at the same time but will stagger the release of games to the virtual console.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,510 ✭✭✭sprinkles

I can see them giving them away free with games and maybe even a few tokens with the console itself, Wii + 2 games :)

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,631 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Gunstar Heroes and Axelay for me :D

I hope they bring out the rarer stuff as well like Sapphire on the TG-16. It gave me a warm feeling inside when the superb Taito Arcade Legends 2 had rarities like Elevator Action Returns, Darius G and Layer Section on it. Great to know that these classics will be experienced by people other than the import and retro nerds. Like me ;) .

Wasnt the issue of old games put to rest during the conference? I read $2 for NES, $5 for SNES, $10 for N64. Which is a bit cheeky for N64 tbh.

As for Wii's price. €150 all in, thanks nintendo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 949 ✭✭✭fobster

And all those n64 games that were only released in Japan like Sin and Punishment. Hopefully they'll be available too.

That would be nice, but in fairness I'd gladly pay €10 for a good N64 game considering the rubbish that's packaged up and sold for €80 inthe shop these days.

I can't wait to play Body Harvest again

it is funny.... you know all the ps3s will be gone on launch day but this is the one time I can actually feel Nintendo having an amazing chance. polls all across the interweb are saying the same. even here..... on the games forum. wii is on like a hundred and somethin votes while the other two are pushin 20.

See, there's all of us, on a games forum, clearly the hardcore gamers. We're all thinking Wii will be impressive.

Then there's all the people Nintendo is attempting to capture with the Wii. The mothers and fathers and uncles and what-have-you, who might also be interested in Wii.

Then there's the middleground, the casual gamers who make every iteration of FIFA and Need for Speed sit on top of the charts. They're the lurcative section of the market, and they're the ones who are still going to be playing anything-but-nintendo for the foreseeable future.

To be honest, I think anything below €180 will seem uncopetitive, and by dumb people's logic, this will make it crap.

You can bet they won't be sold out on launch day here, it'll be all about saving up for a PS3. That probably means PS3 won't sell out on launch day either despite the inevitable (deliberate) lack of supply.

I'm sure I'll be the only person in my age group that I'll know who has a Wii (until Christmas at least). But never mind that, because most people my age think "Pay Ess Thray iz gonna be f***ing lathell!".

I read somewhere that some old games will be updated like Mario-Kart 64 for one and so an updated game would be a steal at $10 i think.

    What do you mean updated?

Also staggering the releases of the old games is a very clever move. Means people wont get burnt out on them all, & also means once a month or whatever you will have a fresh batch of classics coming onto the market.

    I can see it now.

360 fans - "Woohoo Halo 3 is out next month"
ps3 fans - "Woohoo Final Fantasy XIII is out next month"
Wii fans - "Woohoo Super Mario All-stars is out next month"

Like the updated version of Ocarina of Time what released with the windwaker. Just improved graphics really, I dont Nintendo would mess with the classics. Not like the Master Quest, which was ok but didnn't add a thing to the game imo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 531 ✭✭✭Lord Oz

They could sell it at €100 if they wanted to, but will probably go for about €200-€250. That'd still be much cheaper than the competition.

It is fairly laughable when you say it like that but is much better than the alternative of everything being released at launch & after a month the novelty is gone. Personally Ive had them all on emulators on my xbox for years, makes no difference to me.
