How long were you waiting for your full driving licence?

I waited 53 weeks for my driving test which I passed 3 weeks ago.:D The thing is, I applied for my full licence almost 2 weeks ago to my local county council and still haven't received it. Rang their offices yesterday to be told there were 800 applications in front of mine and could be waiting up to 8 weeks to get it. Three things I would like to know are: 1. Is it true that once you pass your test you get some sort of reimbursement from you insurance company. 2. If I'm stopped by a Garda in the next 8 weeks where do I stand with regard to not having my licence in my possession and 3. how long were you guys waiting to get your full licence processed?

    1. yes, you will be refunded for the remainder of the term of your insurance the difference between being insured on a prov and being insured on a full license...couple of hundred maybe

    2. you show them your reciept from the licence office, they will accept it.

    3. about 2 weeks.

Thanks for the prompt reply L5. I actually sent my application in by post so have no receipt from the licensing office. With regard to the reimbursement, should I wait until I get the license or tell my insurance company now?

What authority did you send the licence off to? there is probably a big difference around the country. I have always found Dublin to be very quick though.

The last time I swapped a cert of competency for a licence I got it made up on the spot, had it 15 minutes after I walked in to the building. Not really sure why he offered to do that, could be because it was a professional licence. It's not often that you get better service than expected from government departments, made my day for sure.

5 years ago I sent mine off to Wicklow Co. Co. and it took just over six weeks to come back. About 6 months ago I sent it off to Dublin Co. Co. (to get another cat. added), and it came back inside two weeks, with my fee in the envelope!

As L5 says, your insurance company should refund you. If you're a young driver and not near the end of your insurance period, you should receive a significant refund. Don't wait for your licence to arrive, most insurers will accept that you've passed your test.

Don't think there's any charge for category addition. There's certainly no charge for getting an A restricted converted to an A licence after the 2 year restriction is up. Maybe that's why it came back to you!

Yeah, it dawned on me when it came back that a category addition is the same as an update (change of name/address, etc), which is free.

Spot prize* for anyone who can guess how much, in total, I got off for the last 4 months of my premium when I passed my test.

Contact your local Motor Tax office tomorrow and they should be able to assist you better. Chances are they will need to endorse it first before returning it; I have not had mine taken off of me though so I can't be too sure;)

Wow you were unlucky, I got a provisional the day I turned 17 and applied for my test that same day saying I needed it for work. Got my test 3 weeks later and passed. The one giving me the full licence was amazed.

This was 2 years ago before they brought in that 6 month waiting period.
