    Need some help.

My mate has a Dell 4700...kept getting a blue screen when he'd try to boot up, on second attempt it would allow him boot into safe mode. Anyways I completely wiped the machine for him (format and re-partition) and reinstalled windows (Home) using the CD dell give you. Install AVG Free, then SP2, reboot, no problems, two more updates come from windows update, install them, reboot and now it will only let him boot into safe mode. Uninstall SP2, reboot, windows starts fine and then let windows update install SP2 (used a free CD first time) but same problem.
    Any ideas?!?

One of the solutions worked on my pc, but tbh your best bet is just to not install it.

It's unlikely to be a SP2 issue if the computer is perfectly fine after installing it, from your own description it is installing a post SP2 hotfix through Windows Update which disables the PC.

What are the KB numbers associated with the two updates you install after going to Windows Update ?

Did you try removing any Dell crapware bundled in with the OS image ?

Did you update the system drivers ?

If you can boot into safe mode & recall the two updates installed go into add/remove & tick the box for show updates and remove them to see if the normal boot procedure is restored.

Check the event log in administrative tools under safe mode to see if any errors are flagged.

There wasn't any as it was just the OS that installed

My mate didn't have any drivers cds so I got all the drivers from the dell website

That's all well and good but I want to be able to leave automatic updates on for him so even if I do find out which hotfix is causing the issue, how can I prevent it from installing again?

You can instruct Windows Update to not install certain updates.

When the yellow shield pop's up choose advanced/custom install etc.. and tell it to hide the selected update that will prevent it from being installed. It can also be done through the Windows Update web site interface as well.

Obviously tracking down the source of the conflict would be a better solution though.
