Was about 50 left in an mtt and im about average stack and first 18 get paid.

I get delt 77 in BB everyone folds except SB who calls me all in. He has me covered by about 2k blinds 200/400.

I dont feel like draging my way into 18th place for a measly $20.

I call and go up against JJ with no help.

Id have folded this most times but i called here. Any thoughts?

Fold for me, you've no real edge here. He's putting $5k at risk to win $400 so he has far from a random hand. Also at this stage of the tournament you usually have very good fold equity on pushing all-in (and smaller raises for that matter), so to call all-in, you want to be pretty sure you're a decent favourite.

A good example of the "would you rather call an all-in with AK or 77" question asked by Fuzzbox a while back. I can understand why you want to double up, but this is not a good place to be trying it, unless you really want to gamble. If I thought SB would only do this with overcards I probably call, but other than that, easy fold.

Do you think not? I would say he more or less has a random hand here (he is trying to win 600 not 400), depending on who he is he could be pushing with any two. With 99 I would definitely call here, I think I might call with 77 too.

Yeah, they're not far off the money, and the SB puts in $5000 of his $7000 stack to win $600. Even an aggressive player I wouldn't expect to make this bet with anything approaching a random hand. I think he's unlucky to run into a hand quite as strong as JJ, but I'd say the SB's range is the top 15% of hands or top 20%, something like that. 77 has no edge over this range, if you're being optimistic you could maybe argue it's a neutral chip-EV gamble, but in tournaments you should avoid these anyway when you have no fold equity.

I played in a $9k Tourney last night with a $69 buyin. We were down to 20 with 18 players being paid and it was folded around to the SB. There was 1250 in the middle from blinds and antes and he pushed for 15K, BB (13K) thought for ages, typed that he had JJ and then folded.

    SB showed Q8o...

in the SB's position the strength of his hand is irrelevant, he has a chance to add 10%+ to his stack at very little risk. You have a random hand, and are unlikely to call with a PP lower than QQ. Essentially unless you hold AA/KK/QQ/AK you are folding this more often than not, so it's a worthwhile move.

I'd of folded 77 in this position, no need to get involved yet, I'm all for not limping into the last 18, but you'll get a far better chance to steal blinds/double up than this one.
