The 15-year-old youth beaten in a vicious sectarian attack in Co Antrim at the weekend died in hospital last night. Michael McIlveen died at Antrim Area Hospital at 8pm, the PSNI said late last night.

His family was understood to have been at his bedside.

The teenager was attacked by a group in a car park in Ballymena at around 12.30am on Sunday, according to local reports. Police have upgraded the case from one of suspected attempted murder to murder.

Two men were arrested on Sunday morning and two more men were taken in for questioning yesterday. The PSNI said a fifth suspect, a juvenile, had also been detained last night. Local representatives have appealed for calm and for the public to help the PSNI find the killers.

According to a relative, the dead youth was set upon by several people and beaten repeatedly with a baseball bat by at least one of them while another "jumped on his head".

A suspected loyalist gang had chased the boy and another youth for about a mile from the IMC Cinema in the town after "an altercation" at the cinema, police believe. His friend managed to escape but the victim was caught in the car park behind a department store where he was assaulted by as many as 10 youths.

This seriously pisses me off. How in hell can you beat a 15 year old kid to death? I hope this loyalist gang gets whats coming to them. Every last one of them. The ****s.

Yup....rough stuff. Apparently there have quite a few sectarian attacks happening in Ballymena for the past few months, and to be fair, not just from the loyalist side. Just a matter of time before someone was killed.

It is hard to deal with but these people have no problems putting someone away and getting on with their lives. Im sure more of these happen and the media doesnt report them, very sad. As the previous posted said, it happens on both sides.

    Cheers.

Anywho - I understand the fact that this comes from both sides, but to involve a child in politics is absolutely horrid. I hope everyone involved gets the maximum time possible by the justice system.

    poor kid :(

i think reeducation of whole communities is necessary, maybe a giant loud speaker on the hill pumping anti-bigotry 24/7?

Sounds like something out of 1984, but given the circumstances, they probably need it.

I hope the thugs who did this are caught but i wont hold my breath. A friend of michaels, Kirk McCaughern, was stabbed 2 weeks ago after being attacked by a loyalist mob in the centre of Ballymena. The PSNI later charged Mr McCaughern in relation to the incident that had led to his stabbing. To date, no one has been charged with stabbing or assaulting Mr McCaughern despite the presence of cctv cameras. Perhaps if the MP for the area had been a little more tolerant in his views of catholics over the years things might have been different. RIP Michael.

    Madness.

Just looking at his Bebo too, you see so many (potentially) Catholic/Ireland/Celtic references. So disheartening and saddening that the kids are brought up to identify with all of those at the direct detriment of integrating with the rest of society. Very heartening to see someone from the other side (or so it seems) commenting and realising that religion or not, you should never have your own life taken from you.

    R.I.P., Michael.

That poor boy. Honestly, how can people do such things? :(
His poor parents too, burying your child must be horrific.

Ballymena has always been rough enough. I went to school there, but even then it's been mostly paramilitaries, not schoolkids.
    Very sad.

At least 2 of those charged bragged about killing Michael on their own Bebo pages. For some strange reason, I cannot follow the stuff that is typed on that website, I must be getting old.

The DUP have been stirring the sectarian **** in Ballymena for a long long time. chickens coming home to roost now. The McIlveen family have invited the local MP, Ian Paisley, to the funeral.
On Thursday, Francis McIlveen, Michael's uncle, paid tribute to DUP leader Ian Paisley for his contact with the family and invited him to attend Michael's funeral.

Speaking on the BBC's Nolan programme, he said it was a time for healing in Ballymena.

"I would like him to be there. He was the first one to ring me at the hospital. He is the MP for the area and, to me, he has the right to be there," Mr McIlveen said.

"It doesn't matter what anybody else says, it is what we want. If he wants to come, then he is more than welcome."

He also said he wanted to thank Protestant people for flowers and cards sent to the family.

Indeed. I saw a sad (in more ways than one) photograph of three of his grieving relatives yesterday in the press. Two out of three were wearing the Glesga Celtic uniform. It's almost endemic at this stage.

    R.I.P. all the same.

They wore the jersey because their murdered son was a big Celtic fan and they wanted to respect him. What is sad (the more ways than one bit) about that?

I don't recall that quoted in any article I read. If you point me to something relevant I'll happily recant. My comments are not directed at any particular person (least of all this unhappy family), however, in my experience, the Hoops strip has been hijacked by Catholic, sectarian, ill educated bigots, most of whom couldn't even find Glasgow on a map, or their arse with both hands.

I just read on rte.ie that they have collected CCTV footage of the town centre that week, hopefully will give them a few leads and catch the baxtards.
