Lots to see and do - what are you interested in?

Places to live: Kitsilano, if you're staying long-ish term. You may be able to get short-term accomodation in UBC if you're only here for a few months over the summer.

Lots of work available at the moment as the economy is in pretty good shape. Construction is certainly booming as they gear up for the Winter Olympics in 2010 (loads of big projects going on). Again, some pointers on what areas you are interested in would help in terms of giving you ideas.

The Vancouver Sun has reasonable classifieds for work/rentals.

All going well I'll be there for the year. My degree is in social care but from looking at online job sites there isn't a whole lot in that area over there and what is there is poorly paid in comparison to here. I'm wondering if I do something like the ECDL will that help in getting temp work or something while I'm there. The construction trade wouldn't really appeal as I'm female and not feminist enough to believe that I could survive a building site :)

For stuff do to I'm wondering what the night life, music, comedy scene etc is like there. I know its a pretty outdoorsy place but I'm sure people aren't doing skiing, hiking etc all the time.
Any ideas on what renting accomodation is like or whether places come furnished, some people have told me that generally flats or houses come unfurnished which is a bit crap , seeing as I dont want to be spending money on furniture when I could be exploring the surrounding areas.
Would love to go on a whale watching trip or something like that

    Fair enough :)

Check out some previous threads for some recommendations on nightlife. One addition I have to the places listed is a new spot called the Limerick Junction, run by the same fellow who owns the Irish Heather in Gastown.

Yes, it is a very outdoorsy place. Great skiing in the winter, fantastic biking and hiking year round. Amazing facilities for all kinds of activities. Can be a bit intimidating at first as everyone seems to be incredibly fit. You'll soon get into the swing of things though - before you know it you'll be jogging around False Creek en route to your yoga class while wearing lululemon clothing and drinking a soy matcha latte...

Canada is a separate country to the USA. A J1 will not grant you entry.

You can get in on a Tourist Visa to Canada and stay six months,
to work you either have to get a Working Visa through Usit, or a Work Permit.

Although Vancouverites are known to be outdoors people, they do see themselves as being extremely cosmopolitan, moreso than Torontonians. Nightlife in Vancouver ie. lounges and clubs, not Irish pubs, are quite costly, door charge, etc and usually will have some dress code in effect. People in Vancouver party pretty well and at times, from my experience, in excess - which can be a good thing at times :p No doubt you won't be lost for things to do at night be it the local sports bar watching a NHL Hockey game to a dance club/ rave. Keep in mind though, places are not big in Vancouver and line ups are found on Thurs. Fri. and Sat. nights.

People in Vancouver can be a little up on themselves and cliquey (sp?) but once you get a good group you should have a briliant time. Any search on the internet will help you out for things to do:
