Hi, I'm planning the same and I'd like to ask YOU some questions ;)

I too am Planning a trip round the world for a year with my girlfriend, a route similiar to yours but maybe in reverse, I think it would be better to leave the states til last becuase we may have more tolerance for bad infrastructure (SE Asia) at the beginning. We would also like to settle in Oz for a few months and work.

    1) How much were your tickets and who did you book through? Also, which package did you take?

2)Are you still a student and does this make a difference to the price? (I'm doing my finals so won't be a student by the time we're going, hopefully next Feb!)

    3) Whats the story with working in Oz, do you need visa's and what type, how do you get them etc?

4)If you don't want to answer this you dont have to, but how much do you plan to have in your bank account before leaving, and did you take a loan or plan to? I don't think I can go til I have €10k in the bank and I'm broke at the mo so thats why we don't plan to go til next Feb/March. I don't really want to take a loan and think we'l have to work in Oz to make more money for a few months. I'm also not sure if €10k is enough.

As for what to bring in ur packpack/suitcase, I often wondered that too, I don't even know which to bring!!

I think thats all for now, if I think of any more I'll post them!

    Thanks!

    ok...

we booked through Trailfinders on Dawson St. (natalie/mark very helpful)
they had the best options for where we wanted to go.

We decided to do America first cos we'd have most money then, and Asia will be cheap in comparasion, at the end of the trip we expect to be pretty broke!!
..unless... we get lucky in Vagas in which case 1st class all the way... :D

You're looking at around €1,700 for your flights. we have the 6 stop over option with Quantas/BA. If you want more =more €€ ! we picked this option cos we can change flight dates very flexible for v. low cost. you can change your dates, but not your destinations! so think carefully before u book! have a look at staralliance.com its fun if nothing else! you can dummy book all your flights and see the little plane fly from place to place!! :p

we'r not students! & doesnt effect the cost! gotta be between 18-30 to get visa thats all!!

You need a 12 mnth working holiday Visa if you are going to work. we are definatly going to get jobs at some stage to fund the trip!! visa is €150 www.visafirst.com they'll set up your tax number and bank a/c too. if you do 3months agricultural work ie. fruit picking/farming/fishing... u are entitled to a second yr visa! as far as i know there is no other way to extend your stay on this type of visa!

I think its €3,000 you need in an oz bank a/c before you go. I have to check this out.

If you are going to Thailand/Hong Kong you need vaccines. Its about 3 in total as they are combined. again about €150! eeek i hate needles!

hope that helped answer some questions!

Thanks a mil Pixie, that gives me some useful information!

We're defo going to plan our route this summer, and book before Christmas I hope. When are you going and how early did you book? I was told to go to Trailfinders alright, I have looked at ebookers and USIT too and they all seem to have similiar packages, not sure about the price difference though!

Any idea of how similiar/different they are?

About the bank account thing, that seems fine, what I meant was I think I'll need €10k to myself to fund the trip in total, that is overall! And then work in Oz to fund some more. I didn't mean to be nosey by asking you but I have a genuine interest in finding out how much people plan to have as disposable cash for a round the world trip. I'm not going until I have 10k saved anyway! (I hope thats enough!!)

If I think of any more questions I'll get back to ya!

Just thought I'd mention that Hong Kong offers the same working holiday deal to young Irish folk that Australia and New Zealand do.

It's another option anyway that is probably not very well known.

I've wanted to do something like this for a while but just travel around the USA. And work my way round. It seems like such a great idea but I have the fear of reality kicking in when Im halfway through my trip and realizing my cash is all gone.

Which is why Im working my ass off at the moment to get the money. I wasn't looking at doing it for a year though. Just for the 3/4 months of Summer.

Anyone have any tips? Has anyone done this before?
