Accepting Sterling Cheque from buyer?

    Heyho,

Sold an item on ebay for about 199 sterling.
The buyer would like to send a cheque for the item.

I always deal in paypal so this is the first time someone wants to send me a cheque?

He is happy to wait for the cheque to clear before I send the item over to the UK.

Are there any pitfalls ye can think of before I go down this road?

    Thanks
    Spanner

Sounds okay, but I would give your own bank a call to check what you might be liable for down the line if something is seen to be dodgy. :)

I wouldnt take the cheque if I were you. If you take a cheque from him and lodge it to your bank account you may find that the money has been credited to your account a few days later BUT this does not mean that they cheque has been cleared by the issuing bank. If the issuing bank discover a problem with the cheque when they receive it then the money will be deducted from your account and you can kiss the money goodbye. Foreign cheques are more trouble than they are worth. If you still want to take the cheque ask your bank how much they will charge you for clearing the cheque as well as any foreign exchange fees your bank WILL charge you. Make sure the buyer pays those as well.

Did you say in the ebay auction that you would accept cheques? If not then refuse the bid and take the next highest bid. If there were no other bids then ebay might even let you relist the item for nothing because the buyer wouldnt pay you using paypal.

Im with Beano on this one, unless you mentioned in your listing that you accept cheques then let him figure out way to pay with Paypal like everyone else.

You can always wait 14 days for the cheque to clear and for your peace of mind?

Its up to you but what I'd check is:

    1. Is he a regular ebayer - does he buy just high value items or is it spread out ? Is it only one type of items he buys eg phones ?

    2. Whats his feedback like ? Is it over a decent period of time with decent sellers ? Or is it over a month with guys who are all no longer registered?

    3. From your emails does he seem real ?

I've accepted sterling cash from guys and I've made exceptions and got cheques sent to UK relations for lodging - it all goes down to your gut feeling and whether you think this request is for an out-of-the-ordinary purchase by this guy ...

I don't think its a 90% chance its a scam - there are people out there who don't use paypal (for reasons mentioned frequently in this forum) and who don't want to use it .

avoid a cheque, but not becuase of scam scaremongering.

It can take 3-4 weeks for a sterling cheque to clear in your account, however the funds will be removed from their account after about a week. This means a lot of hassle for you as they will be wondering where their item is.

I ended up getting a customer to call my bank himself and get them to explain the situation directly to him.

You could take the cheque alright, but explain that it may take 4 weeks to clear and that you will not ship under any circumstances before it clears in your account. This alone would put most wouldbe scammers off.
