Purchasing First Bass

I've been playing guitar for a few years now and piano for about 10, hoping to buy a bass over the summer to learn on. I'm looking for a decent instrument - don't know a huge amount about basses - in the e400 odd second hand pricerange. Something I'd be able to grow into (not a Squier/SX/Encore) as I intend making it my main instrument for the forseeable future.

Style of music would probably be Muse/Radiohead/Bloc Party (i.e. Not Metal).

Any recommendations regarding brands/models to look out for? Active Vs. Passive/4 String Vs. 5 String?

    My reccomendations

    Stay away from Squier
    Start on a 4 string
Passive is fine for now.It doesn't really matter.
Look in to second hand definitely.Possibly a second hand Fender.
Or else get an SX.I think a Jazz bass would be best for what you want.Pretty versatile.

There's little to no chance I'll be buying a new bass, depreciation is ridiculous, but thanks for the recommendations - I'm a fan of the ibanez bass there especially.

Well it does if you buy any piece of music equipment new, try to sell it when you want to trade up in a years time and get 30-40% of what you paid for it back. I'm a student, not an accountant, and just don't have that kind of money to throw around.

fair enough, but i would never buy an instrument if i thought i was going to trade it in for an upgrade in a years time!

You're not being very helpful Ferdi.
Ebay's probably your best bet Jimi, though the F/S hear has some nice ones every once in a while.

Oh I know that, I'm just looking for advice on what Brands/Models to look out for. Needless to say I'll be nicking your bassists squire in the mean time :)
