Radiohead - lots of new songs, no new album

Radiohead kicked off the first leg of their european tour last night in Copenhagen and played 7 new songs. However, Radiohead already mentioned in a recent press release that there are now no plans to release an album in 2006, so I guess we'll have to wait a little longer to hear the studio versions of these tracks but I'm sure it won't be hard to find bootlegs :rolleyes:

According to the NME : "The new tracks primarily showcased a return to guitar-driven songs in the style of Radiohead's classic 1995 album 'The Bends', with many featuring the three-pronged attack of Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood and Ed O'Brien.

The new songs sound very good, on first listen.. mix of hard rocking Bends-era type throwbacks (Bodysnatchers, 'Open Pick', and one bizarrely titled 'Bangers and Mash' where Thom plays drums) and some odd ones that sound like they're trying to find a different style (15 Step, House of Cards and Nude, which is a reworking of an old song that used to be called Big Ideas).

Arpeggi sounds great with the full band, could have easily fit onto Ok Computer. They play Let Down, Planet Telex and Black Star live now!

I was there for both nights. New songs sound really good (except for House of Cards which I'm not sure about). Seeing Thom drum is really a sight to behold. A great surprise to hear Let Down (I thought they were going to play Optmistic).

Yeah I really liked the older version of House Of Cards that Thom played solo last year, this new slowed down version isn't as good. But its hard to know with poor quality bootlegs. I love the new version of Nude though.

I actually quite like the new House of Cards.. it has kind of a weightless feel to it that's different from anything they've done before. I'm not sure whether to think the new version of Arpeggi is amazing or whether they've totally ruined it.. I loved the old live take from a few months back where Thom and Johnny performed it with the BBC Orchestra, but the double-time drumbeat on the new take totally changes the song, it feels like an anthem now instead of the atmospheric, Pyramid Song-style feeling of the older version. Nude sounds great alright.. I can imagine that being the centerpiece of their new album. There's a couple of duff tracks among the new songs.. '4 Minute Warning' sounds like the sort of straightforward ballad they might have knocked out for a B-side in 1996, not much going for it as far as I can see. The one where Thom drums seems only average too, on listening to it again.. I'm sure they'll develop as they perform them more anyway.. plus it's hard to hear a lot of the finer details in these audience recordings.
