Nightwatch - your opinion?

I missed this when it was in the cinema, and a search on the review forum came up blank. I got it on dvd the other day and after getting around to seeing it, I'm still trying to work up my conclusion.
I thought on the whole it was pretty enjoyable. I liked a lot of the concepts in it, such as
the Nightwatch having super-powers like the ability to shapeshift and the other realm that they can enter to see the vampires
but at times the plot wasn't entirely clear and it felt to me as if I was missing a piece of what was going on.
Very stylish though, and if for nothing else it's worth seeing for its effects and some of the scenes.

I saw it at the cinema and enjoyed it. Cant wait for Daywatch.

Subtitles were cool, as was the plot although there were a few bits robbed from other films. Liked the twist at the end. Off to play to order the DVD.

I was really looking forward to this, but found it a complete let down, I found myself struggling to follow the plot at some stages!

It did look great though, I think I would prefer a Dubbed version so I can concentrate on the visuals.

Apparently the dvd has super-fancy subtitles but I had trouble turning them on, I ended up having to use the subtitles for the hard of hearing.

The way it was put together on the budget it had was really impressive...but I thought it was a crap film.

The 2 disc dvd has both a dubbed version and a subtitled version according to play.

I hated it, liked the use of subtitles though. It really says alot for a film when you found the subtitles better than the actual movie. Started off well, then got progressively worse with every minute.

Saw it at an advance screening in UGC, I think the majority hated it, as it wasn't a recommended screening went it went on general release, instead it was just a 'discovery'.

Absolute twaddle. 3/10 if I'm being generous.

I found it overly convoluted and cliched. Won't be in any hurry to see Daywatch

very dissapointed after all the hyper, watch a real film last night Come and See

I wouldnt call it convuluted or complicacted at all - if anything I thought the story was very simple, and predictable at times. Story was ok, not great, but the special affects were incredible, even more so when you consider the tiny budget, and were a great achievement. Some of the scenes were brilliant, and the direction was class - some great touches. Thought the ending was disappointing, in that it ended half way through, like an episode of a TV show. I know there's a sequel to come, but found it annoying like that. But overall, really enjoyed the film, defintely worth buying.

I have the DVD - Disc one just has normal subtitle and dubbing, but disc two has the "European" theatrical release, i.e. the cool subtitles

Awful awful awful. It had lots of potential if given to someone that had a clue. Shame.

Ditto, looking forward to the book. I thought it was great, completly unlike anything I've ever seen. I don't think the plot was complicated, it seemed fairly straight-forward to me, but I thought the end culminated nicely. I hope the sequel lives up to the original, although I worry about Fox's involvement in the next 2.

Whats so great about the subtitles? I rented it the other night and couldn't get them to work so had to watched it dubbed. It was okay I thought but some bits were just so damn cheesy and others were down right crap. Worth a watch though. I didnt know there was a sequel (well I didnt even know it was in Russian, meh) but now Im half looking forward to it.

The fancy subtitles are only on the theatrical version of the movie which can be found on disc 2 of the DVD. Disc 1 has the dubbed english version and the original russian version.
I really don't know if you get disc 2 when you rent it. I bought my copy off play.com and it came with the theatrical version.

I missed the movie in the cinema too so i bought it off play. I watched it for the first time this week and i have to say, i really enjoyed it. I didn't find the story complicated at all. Im really looking forward to the next two movies in the trilogy.

I enjoyed this film for what it was.
The only way to watch it is with the subtitles, the dubbed version is dreadful.

i found it confusing at times, but i thought that kinda added to the mystery. it was all revealed so it was ok. it has a lot of different ideas to the usual thing we see in this genre, i think it broke a lot of preconceptions about the main theme. im confusing myself now. :D

I would say the film was mildly confusing. One of those about halfway through you suddenly realise what was going on in the first bit and have a big AH! moment.

Also it may just have been me but I though a couple of the actors were interchangeable and got them muddled up! Great film nontheless. Definately not a no-brainer though. (at least where my feeble brain is concerned)

Well, my copy finally arrived and I watched it tonight. And I have to say I enjoyed it. It wasn't a great movie but it had it's moments. It struck me as if it was made as a pilot episode of a tv series, like an ultraviolent Buffy. As said before, with their budget, the visuals are amazing, and I liked the style of direction, kind of like Amelie on speed. The plot was a little predictable but it didn't get in the way of enjoying it. I watched the original Russian version with subtitles (didn't realise the second disk had what everyone calls "cool subtitles" so I had to use the hard of hearing subs). Still, I'd recommend it for a friday night in with a few beers and some popcorn!

It's on the other disc! I enjoyed this alot. Somewhat confusing at times which seemed to be down to not fully explaining some of the concepts which were presumably better explained in the book/comic/wherever it came from.

Yeah, only realised from the thread! The dvd commentary/interviews provide a little more insight into the concepts and some of the, how should I say, lesser explained parts of the plot.

Saw it months ago and thought it was great.

Just saw it now. Didn't really enjoy it, confusing plot and a bit strange altogether (and I usually love vamp movies).

I haven't seen it yet, but haven't they said that the sequal(s) will be in English... naturally it's part of the plot and nothing to do with the success of the film outside Russia...

Its nothing to do with Fox buying the rights either!
