I'm looking to travel to New York for week with my girlfriend at the end of the month. Does anyone have any recommendations on affordable hotels or apartments? I've got the feeling I've left it too late to find anywhere decent for a good price.

there is a naval tour you can do on the westside of manhattan (sorry I cant be a bit more specific). It is a dock with a destroyer, a submarine and a aircraft carrier. Its prefect if you are a boy who is big into fighter jets, big guns and big boats. I really enjoyed it.

At this point you might be as well to try Lastminute. I've never used them for NY, but I have got fantastic rates in London, Venice and Paris within a couple of weeks of arrival.

Enjoy NY... It's all good! If you want to impress the girlie, try get a table in the River Café in Brooklyn. It's just under Brooklyn Bridge and has amazing views of Lower Manhattan. It's not too cheap and you need to wear a jacket, but for the food, the service and the view it's great!

If you're going to do an open top bus tour, go for the Grey Line. You can get a 48 hour ticket for $99 (maybe less), which means you can do a number of their tours (over 3 days if you time it right) and the guides are fantastic!

If you're shopping, Jersey Gardens is, imho, better than Woodbury Common. No sales tax for one thing in NJ, but you also don't have to take a tour bus. NJ bus #111 goes from Port Authority and costs about $9 return. Woodbury common costs $39, and the journey takes twice as long!

I just got home from NY yesterday - we stayed at the Wolcott hotel http://www.wolcott.com/ which was pretty reasonable (email them for prices - we got cheaper rates than those listed on the site). Its in a great location - around the corner from the Empire State Building and within a ten minute walk of Times Square.
