    Hey all,

I have a P4 (775) 1.8 ghz cpu, I want to upgrade it to a P4 3.2 ghz cpu, do i need to buy the fan with the new cpu or will my existing fan do. I don't wanna take any chances, anybody know anything about Intel and fans etc. I am taking it my existing fan will be ok.

Also, my hdd just died, now its a 40gb hdd and i want to install a 160gb drive, do you reckon this will work ok, its a compaq evo 510 desktop(motherboard) everything else has been upgraded. Now i cant find any info about this stuff on compaqs website, The motherboard holds up to 2gb of memory so am i right in being confident the 160 gb drive will work ok.

    Any info appreciated

Your PC looks like it's the i845 chipset, which only supports Socket 478 (not 775). It'll be a bit harder to find a 3.2 one of those.

    The HDD should be fine

And the old HSF wont work with the new CPU, A presscott Would probably melt the old heatsink:D

if its an i845, dont bother upgrading TBH. Its a 400FSB chipset, limiting to you 2.2Ghz-ish IIRC. There was a run of 2.8's but they are rare, and just like the old 100FSB 1Ghz P3's they are restricted by the lower FSB, rendering the extra clock speed almost useless. 1.8Ghz is S478 territory.

Also, check what memory it uses as the i845 can use PC133 RAM. In which case, a faster CPU is a waste of money.

160Gb should be ok, but be sure to get the lastet BIOS for your computer to ensure you have LBA128 support. Otherwise it wont "see" the full size of your drive.

    Lads,

Thats great, i've finally managed to get some decent info thanks to your suggestions, please see the spec below:

    http://reviews-zdnet.com.com/Compaq_Evo_D510/4507-3118_16-20091350.html

The above is my pc, so do you really not recommend to upgrade the processor.

Can anybody recommend a motherboard to fit this PC, one where i can install a decent CPU and memory, i've already bought a stuff for this so i am better off going the whole way now - just not that up on motherboards and cpu's everything else is fine - pity about the gig of pc 2100 memory i bought for this last week.

    Again all info appreciated

    cheers

To be honest, its a waste of time and money upgrading old PCs,

If you are going to buy a CPU/Motherboard/RAM you should buy a new system.......

that sucks that you just got the memory.

Thing is, if you get a motherboard and more modern processor, you may also need a new PSU. At that stage you are better off getting a new case.

I think start over with maybe an upgrade package from komplett.

Could you possible exchange the RAM against more modern stuff from the company you got it from?

Having looked at the zdnet link, I really think its not worth putting any money into. Weak PSU, relatively poor ventilation, and might not use a standard ATX power connector. Also, it may not have the additional 4pin 12v line needed for modern CPU's.

More to the point, what exactly do you need you PC to do that requires the upgrade?.
