    Go here.
I went there to upgrade my broadband modem and it wants me to feckin register.

And look at the bottom of the page.
Are you a citizen of, or are currently residing in Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Sudan or Syria?
    No
    Yes

I wonder what this has to do with anything, is this a new American registration form field?

[Sarcasm] Or is Microsoft Frontpage adding new fields to websites? [/Sarcasm]

I also wonder what happens if you click yes. After reading this form i dont really want that new modem firmware anymore. All this American politics is gettin a bit feckin ridiculous. Even though i know that this is probably some paranoid webmasters doing.

I apologise if this is not something new, or if i am posting a crap thread that would be better off deleted. - Mods feel free to do so.

Dont forget if you are a terrorist - you have to say yes to that question.

If your a terrorist and want to get your hands the sharp and pointy /dangerous software contained in that firmware upgrade - you would have to lie ! !

Go to the Dell site, and start the process for buying a machine. I always laugh at the questions.

The Cisco site is the same for firmware or drivers.
Something to do with US export laws and sanctions against these countries.

The reason they have sign things like this is to make legal cases easier. If you sign a declaration saying I plan no terrosit conncetions in the UK and then make terrorst connections thaty can act quicker. It is easier to prove you lied signing then an actual case. It seems silly unless you know why

i'd imagine its got to do with silly US cryptography export laws.

ya, i loved the questions that i was asked when buying my dell pc, and that was 3 years ago. the "are you planning on using this product to create chemical or biological weapons?" was quite nice.

what actually happens if you click yes? just not allowed to buy it, or would you be reported to someone?

With Dell if you're buying a standard PC, you have to affirm that you're not going to use the machine for nuclear or weapons research or anything like that.
A few years ago I bought a large machine from them, which is actually capable of being used for purposes like that, yet I didn't have to fill in that form.
    It's a bit odd.

Webmasters generally aren't responsible for crap like this, it's either the fault of the business owner of the website or they are just covering their arses.

Presumably these are American companies, and there are trade restrictions with the countries mentioned. If you check out the Oracle site, they have a quite detailed disclaimer on their downloads page:

In season 3 of 24, the terrorists used alienware laptops.

I wonder are alienware laptops the laptops of choice for the terrorists?

Something a little different but the same in a way.
If any of you have been flying to the US, some of the questions they ask.

Were you involved in the second world war that took place between 1939 and 1945?

Were/are you involved in a nazi organisation?
Were you involved in the persecution of jews?

    Mad stuff.

Let's say that you are a citizen of Sudan.
First you enter Sudan in the required field for Country.
Then you also have to click radio button at "Are you a citizen of, or are currently residing in Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Sudan or Syria?" Lazy programming.
