Speaking in the Third Person

OK, A while back I joined boards and was amazed at the different and sometimes incredible opinions, characters and stories that appeared in the various Boards forums.

Of the many literary devices used to enhance a post, one of the funniest was the idea of posting in the third person. i.e: <Poster> thinks this, <Poster> once did this.... Very funny indeed.

As time has gone on I have found myself getting extremely tired of the same old crap, and no longer find it amusing and tending to skip over such threads.
Why do these individuals do this? Do they gain noteriety from speaking like this? Do they speak like this in real-life? Has it not gone its course and come to the point where its time to start speaking from a regular point of view?

    :D:D

Fuzzylogic wonders, are you spreaking about the user called pighead?

There was a long thread about this sometime ago if I remember correctly

I agree - I tend to skip those threads too. Whatever the person is saying just comes across the wrong way imo. Kind of picture a person sitting at a keyboard wearing a purple queen victoria coronation crown whenever I see that (posting in the third person) as in 'the royal we'.

You will now post in the second person for all of your posts.

Yes it is pretty damn annoying when a person uses the third person continuously. Luckily on boards we only have one poster who does this. If someone tried to have a conversation with me in the third person, I'd either break my b******s laughing at them or else tell the muppets to speak right.

Speaking in the 3rd person is humorous and is probably about just doing something different for a change!!

Coolsmileygirl thinks ya's are all prejudice against the 3rd person speaking thingy

If you had read my post you would have seen that I did for a long time find this amusing. However the consistent use of it has grown tiresome... thats all :D

Speaking in the second-person. That's baffling. Wait, "Stop talking to me Chamlis"? Yeah, if you talk to yourself, THAT would be the second-person. I think...

I should stop talking to myself.

You should stop talking to yourself, Chamlis.

Chamlis should stop talking to himself.

I was taking the piss, i dont care either way

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,130 ✭✭✭✭Kiera

And yet you felt the need to post on a topic that you “don’t care either way”
about? Why not just just post in threads you actually have an opinion on?

You havent given an opinion on it either, your just posting in here to correct me, which is worse!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,130 ✭✭✭✭Kiera

    Its annoying.

I’m not correcting you, I’m helping you. I’m trying to make you see that most of what you say is pointless and stupid. Your first post said you found it funny. Then the next one said you couldn’t care less. Do you see where I’m coming from with my stupid comment?? Are we on the same page csg??

    I've missed us!

I so seen this comment coming :D

Degsy enjoys Pighead's vaguely unhinged rabbitings,it pleases us to see a poster with so many issues facing the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune and by opposing, end them.

I think the only time I have seen it used to comical effect, was when it was used by Peter Griffin on Family Guy.

whether someone gives an opinion in first or third person doesnt matter as far as im concerned.

    what matters is the opinion.

what bores me are people constantly posting pointless threads trying to vindicate their own intolerances.

Twas funny the first few times Liam Lawlor did it. Now I can't finish reading any post written in the third person. In fact I immediately dismiss the whole thread. I wish I could stick my hand through the monitor for it to pop out the monitor of the offending poster so I could punch him/her/it on the snout.

But, as my name suggests, I'm a grouch.
