Ok, we get at least two of these a week. There are currently 2 on the front page.

Any suggestions on how to stop this? Should I be an ass and delete the threads since people haven't used the search facility? Or just ignore it? Any other options? A sticky maybe?

    Comments and suggestions please.

A very good suggestion. Could someone do a general guide to.. and then sticky it and allow people to reply to the thread. Then you could be an ass all you want and delete the threads that get started asking the same questions.

    Ass away buddy.

Have a sticky that tells people to go to http://www.videohelp.com/guides and look under format conversions on how to get AVI to DVD or any other conversion.

Then delete any muppet threads that ignore the sticky.

Edit: having said that there are a lot of stickies in Comp at mo. Anyway of getting rid/trimming down/ merging some of them?

    HAHAHAHAHA. :D

There are a lot of stickies allright. Hard to trim them. I spent a lot of time getting it that low (believe it or not). Then we added the "how much" one. That was definitely a good move. Further trimming is possible allright, but not a lot really.

Maybe a FAQ sticky would do the trick. AVI to DVD would be top of the list for sure.

    My suggestion:

Merge IRC, Useful websites and Free Software into an FAQ. Delete any "crap".

Merge What's Acceptable into a Charter thread. Charter thread should contain a single post and be locked. Better than wading thru several posts trying to find most up to date version.

Dump the FSB/CPU thread. Keep What's mine worth thread.

I'd also lock all stickies bar the last one to prevent them being overfilled with spammy posts, suggestions, OT posts, etc.

Bard handles it well on Portable Media Player forum. Any question asked in the forum that is answered in the FAQ is locked and user told to look in FAQ. Do this a few times and people will learn to look in FAQ before posting.

Is it not more relevant to the Audio-Video Editing forum? Perhaps a sticky in that forum and point people towards it.

A FAQ sticky would be the best idea IMHO.
Concentrate all the usual suspects in to one sticky :)

If you have a FAQ sticky, but instead of it getting huge and covering all of the topics in detail, all you do is provide links to other threads on the subject which do cover it in detail.

    Sticky with capitals:

    CONVERTING MEDIA FILES TO DVD

    :D

Lots of nice ideas. We're moving towards a faq sticky. I like this idea a lot as it's low maintenance:

I'd vote for Changing the name of the Essential Free Software sticky to something like Essential Free Software (with media convertors) or (avi/dvd convertors) or something of that ilk.

Does anyone know how I can burn a DivX .avi file onto DVD please?

Haha, only joking. Some sort of all-inclusive FAQ thread might be a good idea though.
