Do you refer to real or boards name?

This thread is inspired by a conversation I had today with a fellow boardster.

He said that when talking to a boardster (not on the internet) and referring to something another boardster said, he always uses their boards name. Even if he or both know the real name.

I found that odd. I always use people's real name, if I know it. But some time ago, another boardster also said he'd be so used to their boards name, he'd automatically use that one.

So, I'm wondering, what's the majority on this?

Which name to you refer to? 24 votes

Are you asking if I know many boardsters?
No, I don't know many. About a dozen, I think.

A bit of both, depends on the name.

I'm called, Diz, Dizzy and Eileen, I'll answer to all three, so, no, not technically my boards name, but close, by both those on and off boards!

Even if you don't know them well, wouldn't you rather use their real name if you'd know it?

What's her boards name something distasteful? :p;)
    What is it? :D

It depends which is easier to say. My boards name is too cumbersome for reality.

Depends on the name, and the person. Generally don't call people I knew in real life first by their online name. Otherwise I'd tend to use the online name. Prime example is Dregin, who I almost never call by his real name. Just sounds wrong.

In a "Real Life" situation, if I know their real name, I'll use it. If not, I'll ask what it is and then use it. Just feels weird calling somebody Septic Banana (or whatever - I made that one up) to their face.

If we're chatting on boards i would tend to use their boards name. If we're anywhere else i'd use the real name. Though i think if i've met someone i tend to start using the real name alot more!

depends if i have a relationship with the person outside of boards.
if i do, then i call them by their real name.

if its someone like coolsmileygirl, who i have never met, and i have no idea who they are, what they do or what their name is, then if i happen to be mentioning them, i will obviously call them by their boards name.

although, to be honest, id dont tend to talk about people from boards i dont know anyway. i mean, who would i talk about them to?

Well, seeing as my name is Peter and my boards name is Petes, it speaks for itself. I wouldn't really be talking to other people about boards people if I was out. I think I only know one here in fundalk.

I liked my boards name until a certain someone stole it and is now going by the name Xzanti on some degenerate poker player's site

You know who you are... give it back!

I thought the usernames are case insensitive?

I prefer to use boardsers real names, but might use their boards one in a jokey way. Though most still call me ST and shock, in spite of knowing my name. According to a pair of cheeky cows my own name doesn't suit me :p

Ehm, depends on how I know them tbh

Some boardsies that I'd only have ever met briefly at a boards beers I'd call them by their username, others I'd call by their real name.

I knew that had to be it, as it is definitely not a description.

Well, my avatar lighthouse sits on a blue lagoon. I'm not blue, except if I stay out too long in the waves. And I don't look like a lighthouse, although some of the guys do if they get too close. Maybe I am a lagoon?

    Pretty much this.

People I've known before they posted, I probably will call them by their InRealLife name unless I don't see them often and may call them their Net name.

People who I've met after the Net and when I know their name, sometimes I'll use it but if I'm talking to\about them I'll probably use some derivative of their online nick.

The exception would be if I'm talking to someone who isn't online about someone I know who is. In that case I'd always use the InRealLife name.

    Quiet you Paul!

I sometimes call people "You!" because I can't be arsed saying the name :p

Ha! Paul, don't brand me with that gay name.
Kirsty will do just fine thanks.

I actually tend to never say people's names and I notice how much other people say my name. Practically every second sentence.

 Tar's a girl buddy! A lesbian from lesbania at that.

On your other point, I have conversations with people every day where I have no idea what their name is. They know mine alright but I haven't the foggiest what they're called. There are so many words you can use to skirt the issue that it's not even funny.

I'm really slack and rarely ask people what their name is (in any situation). I know people back in Oz from IRC and I've known them on and offline for up to about seven years, and I still don't know what their real names are. On another note, I only know the surnames of friends I work with, or who have their surnames in their email addresses.
