Can anyone advise on a decent computer repair place?? need to try and recover data from my hard drive....my laptop went out in a blaze of glory today causing me to possibly lose all my dissertation data...I know I know, I should have saved externally alas I didn't :-( its even refusing to recover with the XP boot CDs..I'm going to give Knoppix a try but after that I'll have to get it taken apart...

    thanks,
    Pat

If its really a hard drive crash you dont be wanting to taking to your local pc repair shop - they will probably do more harm than good.

I would also limit your meddling.

Your first step should be to put the drive in another pc/laptop and see if the file system is accessable. If not stop!

Then get a data recovery specialist to look at it. They aint cheap - around 3-400 at least.
