Eye Sight Test

I am not too sure if this is the right place to put this, so please move if it is not. Anyway, I am applying for my provisional licence for a moped. I was looking through the application form and it says that you need to et an eye test and the person has to fill out a form saying you have good sight. I was just wondering where would be the best place to go, the doctor or possibly an optition? Which would be my cheapest option?

Go to your GP, it'll only take a few minutes and about €10. Maybe free if they're in a good mood.

Thanks. My eye sight is not the greatest, but when I am near something I can see it clearly, could this be a problem? Do I have to make an appointment?

It's called Myopia (short-sightedness). You probably need glasses.

A lot of places, you won't need to make an appointment, though it can't hurt to ring first.

I know the opticians in Nutgrove (which is where the tax office is) do half price tests if you go in early on a certain day.

There are some places to do a free eye test if you have a certain number of tax credits. I dont know if that applies to you or not OP, but normally you should be able to just walk in and it wont take very long.

Just say if they give you a free eye test you might buy glasses off them:cool:

If you work with computers on a daily basis you should be entitled to a free eye test from work every year, if you work!

That eye test for the driving license is a complete joke. I cannot see a thing properly without my glasses on, but they pretty much just check that you can see the wall in front of you and you pass, it's not really testing anything.

Might explain the standard of some of the drivers on the roads, but thats for another thread.

Please get tested then - for everyone's sake! If you want to drive, you should be able to see down the road. Test yourself before getting the formal test - can you read a number plate (not one you already know btw) from 60ft=20yds=18.25m? If not, you probably need sight correction - for driving at least. You will also enjoy TV and cinema a lot more.

Cheers lads thanks for the replys. I am only 16, so this willbe the first vehicle I will be driving. It does cost a lot of money to get on the road with insurance, theory tests and other costs. I might go to my local specsavers and get it done, I here that will be my best and cheapest option.

Yeah I totally agree. When I got an eye test a good few years ago from my doctor, I was just asked to read the chart of letters in front of me & he said I was fine, so as per my drivers license I don't need glasses. However subsequent to that, I got my eyes tested properly & got glasses. I wouldn't attempt to drive now without them, but technically they aren't a requirement.
So, I can just imagine how many people are driving around that should be wearing glasses but aren't!

This is funny because i got one just yesterday. Got it from the local opticians and it cost 16 euros.

Its just a matter of covering one eye and reading down, then the other, then both and a series of lenses placed over each eye "is this better?". Took about 3 minutes.

I agree, go to SPECSAVERS :D

I passed my driving eye test (7 years ago) but was told I would see an improvement if I wore glasses... I was amazed... and never drive without them now.

    regards,
    Owen

The cost of your eye exam will be the least of your worries for getting on the road.

Since you're 16, I'm assuming you'll be driving a moped. Theory test, licence, and tax will all set you back between €30-€60 each, but the real killer will be insurance. Probably around the €2k mark at 16.

I paid €15 for a basic test, about 2 years ago with an independent optician.

If I were you, I would avoid Specsavers, Vision Express, Boots and all the big chains as the opticians have to meet very high sales targets (something stupid like 95%) and so will sell you glasses that you don't need and are overpriced. Go to an independant opticians - you'll get better service and are less likely to get skanked.
