    .....
Will George Lucas ever stop trying to wring money out of this franchise?

He just can't win can he?

His hopes was to bury the original versions of the movies forever by pushing the Special Editions (the versions of the movies he himself is actually happy with) , but when he eventually succumbs to fan demands for a DVD of the original movies he's just accused of money grabbing.

Yes this is money grabbing... this should have happened when they released the trilogy to DVD the first time.

I have original versions transfered from LD to DVD. I'm glad that finally I can get these with a quality transfer.

You can see the cover-art here if you like http://shop.starwars.com/catalog/product.xml?product_sku=SWFOXOTCW

seems to be a better match for the Ep1-3 DVDs

this is what I thought the first DVD release would be, one disc with the pimped up version and the other disc with the original version

I for one prefer the new special Editions. Especially with the release of Episodes I, II and III, it helps bridge that gap between the movies in technical and visual terms and adds more credibility to the ideal that they happen in order from I through VI. Those added in shots, especially scenes like the ones added for the Rebel strike on the Death Star, really help when considering/watching the movies in that way.

Still, nice to see them, but I would definately not shell out for them regardless of whether I owned the Special Edition trilogy or not.

Apparently these original version are going to be non-anamorphic rips from the 1993 laserdisc version (basically they aren't going to look that good). Word of this is spreading across the net and now lots of people who have almost habitually bought numerous reissues of the SW movies down the year are not going to bite this time round out of protest.

Ironcially my own personal theory is this is exactly what Lucas secretly wants to happen. I'm pretty cynical but my guess is wants this release to do poorly as he can then go "well you were all moaning for a DVD release of the original versions. I did so and then you never bought it!" That way he can put the boo-boys in their place and get on with making A New Hope v3.0 4.0 5.0 etc etc

Either that or he has plans for further improved re-releases of the O-OT and wants to continue throwing table scraps for time to come. However I doubt it as I believe he is genuinely distinterested in promoting these original movies anymore and just wants to shut the door on them anyway he can.
