Santiago de Chile to Buenos Aires ... route needed

Any suggested routes people have taken?

We have approx. 2.5 weeks and want at minimum 3 nights in Buenos Aires.

    Current thinking is:
(land) Santiago -> Mendoza -> Cordoba -> Buenos Aires -> (Air) El Calafate (Glaciers) -> Buenos Aires.

Anyone else got one they liked or any comments on the current route are all welcome.

    TIA/BID

Your route is exactly the route I took this time last year (jakers, has it been that long?!), except for the detour to the glacier.

As I may have mentioned before, the bus trip over the Andes from Santiago to Mendoza is absolutely spectacular, winding up and up past Aconcagua and through the Cristo Redentor tunnel. Make sure you get a day bus and a window seat, and bring some food and drink.

I don't know if time in Santiago is counted in your 2.5 weeks, but first appearances of that city are deceptive and I think it's worth spending at least a few days there. I would also suggest skimping on time spent travelling onwards in favour of spending longer in Buenos Aires - it's a fantastic place that deserves at least a week. But if you don't have the time, you just don't have it.

In my opinion Mendoza and Cordoba, nice as they are, only warrant a stay of two or at most three nights each, unless you're into adventure sports and whatnot. There are loads of interesting bodegas around Mendoza, and when I was in Cordoba I spent a pleasant day wandering around the sleepy little town of Alta Gracia whose main attractions are 1) an immense and fabulously preserved Jesuit estancia, and 2) Che Guevara's childhood home, which is now a museum.

And for the endless overnight bus journeys (Mendoza -> Cordoba -> BsAs) I found an inflatable neck rest and earplugs to be invaluable.

    Enjoy.

Cheers PunyHuman - do you recon is it doable in 2.5 weeks?

Say 2/3 days in Santiago, 4 days in Buenos leaving 10/11 days for the rest including travel time?

    TIA/BID

It's certainly doable but the questions are, how rushed do you want to be, and what do you want to get out of each place? Santiago, Cordoba and BsAs are massive cities and you won't get a good feel for them unless you spend a while there - exactly how long depends on you, of course.

Also bear in mind that most of your travelling will be on night buses so you'll still be able to explore during the day.

So yeah, it'll be fine, sure you might decide on the day to spend longer in one place than another. I wouldn't plan too vigorously.

By the way, I hope you're not a vegetarian!
