    Hey,

I've heard you've got to take a lesson if you want to rent a surfboard in Lahinch - is this true? Is it the same all over Ireland? Does the same apply to bodyboards? New to the surfing thing so any info is much appreciated.

    Thanks! :D

Dunno but if you're new to surfing a few lessons might be a good thing.

If only we had a surfing forumn!

    *cough*

Anyway, i don't think there are qualifications as such in surfing. But to hand someone a board and let them go nuts would be irresponsible IMO. Taking a couple of lessons first is the best course.

yeah, of course, but it would get expensive fairly quickly if you had to take a lesson everytime you just wanted to get a board. Obviously, buying a board is the alternative but for the first while, renting seemed like a good option before splahing out on a board. I was just wondering if anyone knew what the story is

I'd hazard a guess and say that you don't have to take a lesson everytime you rent a board and that the shop is just making sure nobody drowns. They're probably just making sure you know what you are doing.

Anyway, why don't you get in contact with them and find out from the proverbial horses mouth: http://www.lahinchsurfshop.com/lahinch/

Bang up a report on how you find it if you go will ya. I've been meaning to learn to surf for a while now. I was going to do it in a warm water location but I think I'll do it here instead.

Evil_Phil, a surfing horse is a fantastic idea.

Having been there yesterday evening, here's the story: Lahinch Surf Shop won't rent anything, the guy in the green room told us he would rent stuff but in a way that made me think he'd only do it if it suited him (which is fair enough, they are his boards) and the guy in the third shop said he does rent boards but tried his hardest to get us to buy the gear! The prices are ok, €25 (less if you have a wetsuit already) for two hours is the most you'd pay I think.

Then again, a lesson costs about €30 per go so it's not much cheaper to rent

One of the shops a does rent. I remember enquiring on the phone a few months ago about it. Definitely wasn't the green room which was a shame. Sound folk. But it was expensive - €25 odd for 2 hours, compared to the likes of the UK where it's about as much for an entire day.

Hey ya myself and 3 friends are off to climb Carrauntoohil tomorrow the plan was to surf at Inch the day after but prices seem to be charged by the hour not by the day like up in Bundoran. We would travel to Lahinch if it there were a per day charge.
