i'm considering buying a few things from the states which cost $170, totalling to $220 with shipping to ireland. i regularly buy runners and stuff from the states and have only ever been charged import duty once in 3 years, but i have never bought anything from the states costing more than $150. i guess the likelihood of being charged import duty gets higher the more expensive the item is? what sort of duty would i be charged on $220 (175e) if i were caught?

if i split the order up into 3 separate packages of about $80 / 64e (which makes shipping to ireland more expensive) would i completely avoid having to pay import duty? even though the shipping is fairly expensive its by regular international mail not courier.

    cheers
