iPod/iTunes question

So I have an MP3 collection consisting of stuff I like and some other gunk I have lying around. I imported this into iTunes and copied over to the iPod. Obviously I now have have all the gunk on the iPod which is a bit irritating. The MP3 collection is the master copy if you will, so when I rip or buy new MP3's, that's where they go. I then re-import the library into iTunes whenever the MP3 collection changes.

Is it possible to get iTunes to realise that some portions of its library should not be copied to the iPod?

No thats one of the problems with iTunes/iPod.

You can clear you liabary, and only put in it the music you like. You will still have the music files of the other music you dont want on your iPOD.

You could use a different music player to play the music on your PC.

Do you mean u dont want your library to match your ipod? if so just manually select the music you want put on your ipod that way your ipod wont automatically update with everything new in your library.

To choose whether music is updated automatically or manually, choose Edit > Preferences, and click the iPod tab. Then click the Music button, and make your choices

untick every track you dont want transferred to the ipod and then choose 'update checked songs only' fom the ipod menu in itunes.

How do you know this when you don't own an iPod? You're a bit of a **** to come onto this thread and start telling lies to the original poster, aren't you?

Yes, easily enough. Either do as ffocused said or else create playlists with the music you want and then go to Edit -> Preferences -> iPod and switch from "automatically update all songs ..." to "automatically update selected playlists" and then put check marks against the playlists with the songs you want.

Note you can simplify this by using "Smart Playlists" (File menu) to automatically create a playlist for this purpose with only, say, tracks that are longer than two minutes etc or tracks greater than a certain size and so on, if the problem is lots of short files etc

    Art,
You would want to calm down. I did not lie. I had the 30g Video Ipod. I converted my wma's to MP3 so they would play on it. When i updated the library it would automatically update the IPOD not like the creative software. If there is a way around that so be it.

The post was given in good faith, so get so emotional. Ye big baby :)

with your ipod connected,in itunes create a new folder called (your name) ipod. drag and drop the music you want into this folder. in preferences tick manually manage songs and playlists. when you want to update right click on your ipod playlist and select update. any new songs you want just drag and drop. the folder will only appear when your ipod is connected.

Ah yeah, I apologise. I had a bad day at work, was late home, and was already fuming before even opening the thread :(

Probably a good month after you've stopped looking at this thread, but Smart Playlists can be a really nice way to still have your iPod update automatically but only with what you want. I have a 120GB collection and a 30GB iPod and a rake of smart playlists determining what gets copied on.
Can be a bit of a pain setting them all up but if your like me and you want everything sync'd like playlists, playcounts, ratings etc(i also sync photos, videos, outlook, the lot) then this is the way for you.
Basically set up a rake of smart playlists for things like 5star songs, most played recently added, I use the comments field a lot too. Then in your iPod preferences in iTunes have it sync all/none/some of these etc etc.

Edit: hmm art pretty much suggested this already! oops.
