Broadband - reinstall help

    Help wanted please.

    Background:
I have the Eircom Broadband (BB) Time package for over a month. No problems until last week, nothing new was added / downloaded to my PC. Then last Wed / Thurs (can't remember what day) I couldn't get a connection, this continued (and remains unavailable) until last night I decided to do something about it.

I decided I would attempt to uninstall and re-install the router using the two CDs supplied by Eircom. I'm unsure where things went wrong but the re-installation seemed to be going fine until the last step until a thing called a 'Found New Hardware Wizard' stepped in and decided to finish the job. Neither installed as required and my connection is fecked.
My PC software knowledge is limited but amongst things I did suggested by a more knowledgable buddy included:
running regedit to remove all reference to Netopia (router manufacturer)
    I checked the device manager.

    Any suggestions???

You really shouldnt mess with regedit if your PC knowledge is limited. Go to device manager and remove the router from there. It should have an uninstall option. Restart the computer and use the cds. "Found New Hardware Device" is Windows Plug 'n' Play picking up your router and normally installs a driver itself from a location that you specify.

I've had to reinstall my Netopia router on my parents PC millions of times... the USB seems to be really fidgety...

If it happens put in the Eircom CD, choose to remove the USB connection (I assume you're using USB as I don't think you need to install if you're using the ethernet connection) and then re-install it. If the Found New Hardware dialogue comes up ignore it (hit cancel or whatever to make it go away) and let the Cayman installer do it itself.

If that doesn't work try using the Eircom CD to remove the USB connection and then close the Eircom CD.

Open up Control Panel and then Add Hardware. Make sure the router is connected and search for hardware that's been connected but hasn't been installed yet.

Look for Cayman Netopia or something along those lines, click on that and when it asks for the drivers tell it to look in a specific location. Specify the path to your CD/DVD drive with the Eircom CD in it and let it do the rest.

If your PC has an ethernet port (I know 99% of them out there do but the one on my parents PC has never worked, I suspect it's a hardware fault because I've tried reinstalling the drivers etc) and just use the Eircom CD to install it via Ethernet.

    Hope something here helped :)

    Thanks for the replies folks.

Steveland, I've tried those suggestions you made but the found new hardware dude can't be ignored. I can click cancel but it opens back up almost immediately.

I suspect the solution is beyond my capabilities and may require outside expertise.

    thanks again

Cheers dude, I'm not sure exactly how I did but your suggestions to look into the add hardware seemed to work a treat. It allowed me to uninstall and then reinstall the router without that little wizard bastard interfering!

    Cheers again.

Now if I could only figure out why my PS2 controller has stopped working!
