hmm not very happy we seem to be bad starters and general peak a bit more towards the end. would of liked to have got Italy and Scotland towards the begining. England are going to be baying for our blood, to be fair we were quite lucky this year a lot of things went our way, few injuries and some favourable ref decisions.

Still Ireland v England17:30Croke Park, Dublin

Still cant belive it is going to happen, It will be the largest capacity stadium in the competion

Wow what a break with tradition!!

A momentous fracture with the past. Something that has been held sacred for so long because of the special place it held in the hearts of many of our young sportsmen. I'll bet there were people who never thought it would ever happen.

But it is going to happen.

    Next year.

    2007.

In the Stadio Flaminio in Rome at 2:30 pm.

THE IRISH RUGBY TEAM IS GOING TO PLAY AN INTERNATIONAL MATCH ON ST PATRICK'S DAY.

And to make matters worse, some bunch of shysters are trying even to change the name to Super Saturday. Well they can stick that up their jaxies along with ****ing Boxing Day. It's Paddy's Day, all right.

This, to the best of my knowledge, has never happened before. Paddy's Day has always been kept for the schools Cup finals, at least in Leinster and Ulster. You couldn't possibly have an international match on at the same time as two anxious mothers are waiting to see who gets to kiss the winning captain.

If March 17th ever landed on a Five Nations match day, Ireland didn't play. Simple as that. They played the following week.

But now Super Saturday is intervening. Another sacred tradition gone. It's the beginning of the end, I tell you.

Ireland have definitely played an international on St Patrick's Day. Also a few years ago the Schools Cup Final was postponed from St patrick's Day in order to preserve the pitch for an international.

Anyone know when Ryanair will have prices up for flights on the Italy weekend? Aer Lingus are already looking for over €500 per person, and I really would like to go to Rome!

Looking forward to the games in Croker though!

When? Some time in the 19th century?

They definitely haven't in the last 20 years or so.

The only years in that time on which Paddy's Day has fallen on a Saturday have been 2001, 1990, 1984 and 1979, and 1973.

In 2001, you may remember, three Six Nations matches were postponed thanks to foot and mouth disease. So after we had beaten France in Lansdowne Road in February, we had to wait until September to play Scotland, England and Wales.

In 1990, the Five Nations held their breath for the Wooden Spoon decider between Ireland and Wales at Lansdowne Road which took place on March 24th, a week after the relatively minor affair of the Grand Slam decider between England and Scotland had been decided in Murrayfield.

In both 1984 and 1979 our last match was against Scotland on March 3rd.

And in 1973 we didn't play our last match until April.

I can definitively look these all up but I would very much doubt if we ever played a match on Paddy's Day.

That may well be. Still a Paddy's Day match for our team is still a first. I would almost bet my life on it.

    OK I stand corrected.

According to my records, Ireland did indeed play one match on St Patrick's Day.

It was in 1900 and we lost 3-0 to Wales in Belfast.

So make next year's fixture the first time in more than 100 years, and the first time in the history of the state, that Ireland will play an international on Paddy's Day.

Thats the one. Indeed it will be the first ime in the history of the state. SHould make for a good St Patrick's Day in Rome

These will drop in price over the coming months - it was the same for Paris last year when the fixtures came out - got 2 return flights for 78 euro in September.

Wonder how the ticket situation will turn out for the french match. Is there going to be a lot of people there who will wait another 10 years before their next match?

Yes, it'll make the Munster Leinster ticket frenzy look small. Everyone is all of a sudden going to be a massive rugby fan and I'll be shocked if it's easy to get a ticket. It should be of course but it won't. There's 15,000 people who play rugby in country. The stadium could easily accommodate every member of a club in the country and their families!

In Ireland? There's approx 60,000 players with approx 210 clubs plus 250 schools. If each club has for example 500 no playing members thats over 100,000 club members.

Not a hope - I suspect that will be as difficult to get tickets for Croker with only an extra 30,000 to go around and many of those will probably go to Croke Park season ticket holders and corporates.

I'd say pavilion members, or associate members make up the bulk of members in a lot of clubs.

The IRFU reckons there are 60,000 players in ireland - http://www.irishrugby.ie/htmlpage/62479.html - the 15,700 looks like adult playing members and how an adult is defined I don't know. Maybe I was bit OTT with 500 members per club but I know mine has well over 1,000 like other clubs in my area.

Really the point I wsa trying to make is that Croker could not easily hold every member of a club in the country and their families!
