Basically you need a "free to air reciever" and a dish pointed at the Astra 1 satellite (19 East)

If youre up to installing yourself you can buy the equipment yourself in Maplin etc If not you need to speak to one of the better satellite installers

Lots of Installers/retailers here in Ireland should be able to help you.
What County are you in so some one here on boards.ie can point you in the right direction

you can get this fta kit off corksat http://www.corksat.com/oscommerce/product_info.php?cPath=37&products_id=119&osCsid=34b8c4f463e1589af33b820e2e1d2d15
for 123euro incl. delivery, which is a real bargain.if you can drill a few holes in the wall you should be able to put up a dish no problem.

List is horribly out of date - Ultravision never did satellite to the best of my knowledege and they went out of business last year anyway.

German is all 19.2E (well, 95% of the channels are), and thats by far the easiest for self install. Indeed, the manuals for most sat-in-a-box kits are written for 19.2E installs.

I thought that would have been Astra 2 @ 29.2E. Do they not transmit with more power, the reason why a smaller dish is needed? Or does it have to do with positions. Perhaps I'm saying something stupid, I don't know much about it. I'm trying to learn something here...

No, the "home" if you like, of the German channels is the 19.2 position. An old analogue box would be a cheap option for you as most of the German channels are still transmitting in analogue as well as digital. There are plans afoot though to move all German services to Nagravision encryption and digital only. This is a few years away though. (There are German services on Astra 3A at 23.5E - but these are very tightly focused and you'd be very hard pressed to pull them in in this neck of the woods)

The 23.5 is almost OK on 80cm. A 110cm is needed, but those are mostly pay tv.

I'm not sure the idea of encrypting the exsiting FTA channels @19.2 would work with German audience. They would stop watching rather than pay. I think it was only an idea floated by Pro Sieben.

Its a bit more than Pro7. Its Astra themselves who want to do it, and Pro7Sat1 and RTL are both involved. However, the German anti-cartel authorities are investigating, as they'll be using APS, Astra's conditional access firm and it all gets a little... illegal looking ;)

If you arent in any major hurry then keep an eye on the LIDL promotions over the next few months. About twice a year they sell a full satellite kit for a very good price.

With regard to the Astra German "Package", they certainly have a lot of persuading to do. In German shops, they still sell analogue receivers, and amost all of the digital receivers they offer are FTA only - no CI slots or embedded card slot. They would probably have to offer a free receiver package, or else many people would have to replace their analogue or digital FTA boxes to get the new service.

They still sell analogue heavily in France because theres no TF1 on their FTA digital package. I can't see analogue going away any time soon let alone FTA digi in Germany

Or, if RTL/Pro7 encrypt after all, I can't see them being in business much longer.
