I'm not sure if this has been posted before but I thought it was worth mentioning - if you subscribe to eMusic.com (need credit card details), you get a free 14-day trial period which entitles you to 25 music tracks. I just registered with my 3V card, then downloaded a fairly obscure 'Best Of' which would've cost me €25 in HMV within 15minutes, and then simply cancelled my subscription straight away - basically getting a totally free album...

Handy if there is something obscure that you've been looking for and don't want to pay :)

Emusic have a great service, have been a member for ages now. They've just added a lot of 'european' labels recently and are well worth a look.

OK....we know iTunes is legal.....we know Napster is now legal, and there are a few more legal sites where you can buy music; Im joined eircom music club and its fine.

But my question is (and sorry if its a little off topic) how are we supposed to know WHAT sites are legal and what are not? I mean, €29.95 membership for a year, or even life, seems too good to be true. But how are we meant to know? Suppose we WANT to keep within the law, but unwittingly break it?

I was a member of EMusic, and yes, I did find them good. But I do remember emailing them asking for details of their royalty payments to artists or labels, and I got no reply.

Then there are sites that are legal in their own country but may not be legal here....tricky.

They are from what I know definitely legal, and connected with a large number of independent labels, how the royalty payments are made and what percentage I don't know - but I know what you are saying, it's not like there's a list anywhere..........but they are great, they have significantly remodelled payments for music on the site, I remember it was unlimited downloads for a monthly charge, now they've limited to a number of tracks over a few different models, making it less attractive to people that just want to constantly download, I love Emusic though, have gotten a lot of good stuff off them over the last 4-5 years, lot's of underground/obscure stuff........

Oh Absolutely, Im not knocking tham at all. The only reason I left was I wasnt actually using them enough! Actually I have credit with Eircom Music Club that I need to use up too!

i suppose what Im saying is the powers that be (whoever they are) who moan and groan about illegal music downloads, and then try to prosecute people, should create some system or badge of recognitiion that valid sites could display.

Though from what Ive read, the main cases here were against file sharing.

Might even think of rejoining e music!

That wouldn't surprise me, they can be bad at replying to general queries sometimes. They're better when replying to actual problems that stop you from using the service though.

Someone on their message board mentioned before that deals are struck on a label by label basis so royalty payments wouldn't always be the same in that case.

Great post man, I just got most of a Reindeer Section album and a Stars album. Good service, its just a pity they didn't have more artists on it.
