Can anyone help ,I would like to organise a train trip to Portugal, where would I start . Getting fed up with package holiday's ,thought I'd try something different.

I don't understand. Do you want to start in France and work you're way down or something? If you're interested in a train trip, why not go to central/eastern Europe rather than limiting yourself to the Iberian Penninsula?
