Is that missile silo still up for auction on ebay? I propose we start a collection.

I've watch Stargate too long to be foolder by this... Anyway, we kick Annubis's ass in this episode so I'm not too worried.

The Wraith on their way from Atlantis are my main concern now.

Tracking where all the bits from this comet which exploded end up
is impossible at this stage but with 40 fairly sized rocks flying by near
earth we do need to look at the possibility of an impact.

I personally dont know what a rock the size of a 2 story house would
do if it collided with earth.

Just make sure you dont forget to carry an umbrella that day, just in case.

It would leave a nice crater... nothing catastrophic though. Although if that rock was to hit a city... I suggest we call Steven Segal and send him up into space to kick that comets ass..

    .0001 AU = 1,495.98 Kilometers or 9295.58876 miles.

Not that close and not even on the projected collision list.

    Not that close???
    I beg to differ - that's a mere gee-hair in astronomical terms.

Somehow I dont think this is much to worry about. If it was that dangerous, I think we would of heard about it by now from the experts.

    Fingers crossed anyway!

Panic not everyone, I have it on good authority that this rock is actually an intergalactic 18-30 club full of nekkid beautiful people. They are passing by the Earth to see if any of us are sexy enough to be taken on board and to continue with them in their universe wide quest to find pure beauty.
As a result, I recommend all beautiful earth ladies wear no clothes on these days. Your may not get another chance.

Something the size of a VW Beetle would do a fair bit of damage if struck a city alright. And you say its the size of a two story house? AFAIK something a kilometer wide could be devastating, maybe even civilisation destroying. Something 10 km wide would be catastrophic. Know that there are things out there far bigger than that floating through space. Save us Jupiter!

well it wouldn't matter if it hit the desert or a piece of uninhabitated land, but if it hit a city, it could cause more than a good few casulties/deaths

Any chance it could land and take out Limerick? Maybe if it broke in two on etry it could do a job on the North side of Dublin too.

So this explains why Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is so keen to develop Nuclear Weapons, He obviously wants to nuke this Comet and save the Iranian People.

A meteor the size of a house would probably do sweet **** all. If it hit a city then it might take out a block. Depending on how it enters the atmosphere it might even burn up on entry. It really depends on what its made of. If we get one "house size" worth of pure iron core then it could be bad, if we get one house worth of softer lighter bits then we'll see a pretty flash and nothing more.

It isn't going to hit us. Look http://www.eso.org/outreach/press-rel/pr-2006/pr-15-06.html
Fragment C of the comet should be the closest to Earth on 11 May, when it will be about 12 million km away, while fragment B will come as 'close' as 10 million km from Earth on 14 May. Although this is the closest a comet ever approached Earth in more than twenty years - even Comet Hyakutake's smallest distance was 15 million km - this is still 26 times the distance between the Earth and the Moon and therefore does not pose any threat to our planet.

space, the final frontier, and where this thread should be.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,780 ✭✭✭✭ninebeanrows

The comet itself is millions of miles away but fragments of the comet which has broken up spread out millions of miles. And one such fragment could
strike as close at 9000 miles from earth:)

    A astronomical hairline

All the parts of the 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann Comet are being tracked by Nasa. See this table: http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/ca/

According to this, the closet part of the Comet on May 11th will be 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 3-BC but its miss distance will 31.8 LD's (each Lunar Distance is approx 240,000 miles). Thats not a risk.

Check out this table to see risks:
    http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/risk/
    http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/risk/2004vd17.html

2004 VD 17 has about a 1 in 1000 chance of hitting Earth in 2102 so it wont affect us on boards.ie but could affect our children and grandchildren.
