Travelling around Croatia

Hey everyone,

Im going to head over to Croatia for 10 days in August. I'm not keen on the whole package holiday thing, so was thinking about booking flights to Dubrovnik and booking only 2 nights in a hotel. After that I was hoping to maybe do some island hopping and travelling around.

Has anyone any advice or pointers?

I heard the island Pag is a great laugh, though I was not there myself. Can you fly direct to Dubrovnik? I had a quick search and is a map of (some) of the islands around Croatia.



Dubrovnik doesn't seem like a great place to base yourself if you want to go island hopping. Then again, I suppose you could make your way north and fly home from somewhere else. Can you fly from Split anyone?

Thanks a mill, ur very good. U can fly direct with aer lingus to dubrovnik. We probably wont base ourselves in Dubrovnik, but will fly in and out from there. It may even make sense to travel north and fly back home from Austria or Italy (excuse me if im totally off the mark - not the best at the old geography)

Dubrovnik is beautiful. Korcula is like a mini Dubrovnik. Hvar is a lovely island and has a great atmosphere there. I based myself in Split for a few days and did trips to different islands. Beware of accom in Split - make sure it's near the centre if you are taking private accom. Up north Pula, Rovinj are quite nice. Trieste isn't too far away to be flying out of if you are up that far. Travelling back to Dubrovnik will take ages - about 14 hours by bus or pretty much a day by ferry from Rijeka. You can also get a ferry from (i think) Pula to Venice or somewhere near venice. You may then be able to fly back from Italy.

Booked my flights last night and am flying out this Thursday ( 8th June) to Dubrovnik until the 17th ( 10 days roughly).

For the first 2 nights and maybe the last night and then just winging it.
Would be arriving on Thurs evening (7pm'ish) so don't want to be stuck for somewhere to stay.

Other than that, I haven't a clue what to do. Have been reading the posts around here and elsewhere and am a bit torn between islands and travelling around Croatia itself.

The idea of paying the first 2 nights a gives me a bit of space to walk around the town on Friday and gather some info and plan some kinda course of action for the next few days.

Would I be best to stay in Dubrovnik a for 1st 3 nights ( thurs - Sat night), then maybe islands next 3 nights( Sun - Tues), 2 nights travelling around Croatia ( Wed -Thur) then back to Dubrovnik on the Friday, stay there and fly out on Sat?
Is that cramming too much?
How far could I go island wise on that?
Last question. Would it be better to go as far as Hvar via islands over the 3 nights and then drive back, or shuld I just go as far as Korcula and back to Dubrovnik and drive around from there?

If you're flying into Dubrovnik, suggest to maximise your time, you don't go any further North than Split/Trogir.

Next time you go (and you will go a next time !) ... you can fly into Split or Trieste and cover off the other part of the country.
