Screen Resolution Survey...

Got to thinking about current screen resolution trends and after searching most of the major search engines most of the stuff I can find is out dated by about 2 years.

The highest percentage of users then seemed to be 800x600 but that information two years old and I was wondering if anyone had any more upto date information? Most recent I can find is a start towards 1024x768 which would seem to be what most new monitor resolutions are pre-set at. The last 10-15 I've worked on have been.

My thinking on this is that boards.ie is quite a busy board and even if only say 10-20% of the active userbase vote in a poll type survey it would give a good idea of current user trends.

It would be a good resource for webmasters giving a clearer picture of designing there sites to target the highest amount of users. In an ideal world a site should work across all resolutions/monitor sizes/browsers/operating systems but I can't for one afford the luxury of multiple machines to be able to do that so like most, I have to go for the highest target audience possible.

At the moment from what I can find those are 800x600 and 1024x768 @ 77% collectively of end users. The other 23% being split at varying levels including 640x480 (HuH? Still? )..

I found this article quite interesting though they clearly point out that statistics can be misleading and shouldn't be relied on alone.

    http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp

Maybe Admin would run it for say a month once a year? It would be a good resource for them in that context as well, like..

    Anyway just an idea...

    btw mines 1024x768

edit: I think I'll try this at other places as well I know - the more data the better I reckon.. :)

I run any of my machines also at 1280 x 1024

This probably isn't the best place for such a survey, since you're not going to find the "norm" here :)

    I'm 1280 x 1024.

Yes, most of the info available on this is out-of-date. EchoEcho was good for these kind of stats but it looks like that site has been dead for a few years.

The whole screen res thing can depend on your target audience. I'm not sure if stats from this forum would be representative of general trends. I think the W3schools stats you refer to are possibly a good rule-of-thumb...

    ^^^

If you design for 800*600 you won't go wrong.

I think I'm on 1680x1050 at home and work is 1280x1024.

The best question you can ask this forum is their site-stats probably.

My most popular site breaks down like this:
    54.08% = 1024x768
    33.67% = 1280x1024
    6.12% = 1152x864
    5.10% = 800x600
    1.02% = Unknown

    1024x768

On all 3 of my machines, 2 x Mac desktop and a PC laptop.

    1024x768 here (lap-top).

I either design to that or 800x600 (or variable width), usually depending on the nature of the site (if it were highly multimedia oriented I usually wouldn't bother apeasing the 800x600 crowd).

1680x1050 on my main PC... 1024 on my other PC.

1280x1024 on my PC at home, 1024x768 on my PC at work (crappy old KVM switch blurs up the higher resolutions), 1024x768 on all the Windows servers at work, and 1024x768 on the "family" PC.

not a great place to do a survey as most of us here are more computer friendly than others, but 1280 x 1024 here, and 1440 x 800 (i think) on my laptop
