Dell Inspiron 9100 Problem (as usual)

    Hey guys,

Hoping someone here can help me because Dell Tech Support is useless. Basically my problem is this:

I'm running Windows XP Pro on a Dell Inspiron 9100. It's a little over a year old. The system will not start up most of the time. When it fails to start up the screen will flicker and remain black. The capslock, numlock and scroll lock lights remain lit for roughly 5 seconds, it will then shut down.

If it does start it will function normally however any movement of the computer will cause the display to flicker and go black, a crackle is audible when this happens and the system is still powered on.

I have tried starting the system without the power cable or any other peripherals attached, the problem still occurs. I have done a system restore, viruc scan and all the usual jazz but no difference. I also took it apart and reassembled it but again no difference. It also seemed to get progressively worse as time went on, failing to start up more and more after each shut down.

Sorry for the longish post but I'm on my girlfriends Mac and it's driving me mental (as is the lack of Oblivion).

try with external monitor to narrow down possibility of motherboard and / or backlight problem

sounds like hardware , very little you can do with a laptop bar taking out additional memory etc , you could try running on mains without the battery in there , some laptops require the bater in to complete the circuit , others don't

try resetting to bios defaults , worked once on a old compaq with corrupted display

apart from that , take off the cover above the keyboard and check for only loose connections around the hinge , if it does the same with an external monitor then more likley a motherboard problem

if you are outside the 1yr then Dell will be extra unhelpful

Best to locate a third party Dell service centre via google and agree a price beforehand for inspection fees
