    HI,
I have a question about a sound card and connecting to a 5.1 system.

At the moment I have a gold RCA cable from my dvd player to the amp on my 5.1 cinema system - simple enough.
I was given a creative sound blaster Audigy 2 (with 5 or 6 audio connectors) and want to connect this from my media pc to the cinema system.

These are the 5.1 amp inputs/outputs
    Inputs
    -SPDIF: Coaxial, Optical
    -RCA Left/Right (Stereo)

    Outputs :
-RCA Front Left/Right, Rear Left/Right, Subwoofer

And these are the Creative connectors
Line level out (Front / Side / Rear / Center /Subwoofer)
    Microphone in
    Line in
Digital I/O (for stereo SPDIF output to Digital I/O Module**)
    Telephone Answering Device in
    Aux In

So, how can I connect these two.
SPDIF is the only common item here - not sure what that is.
    Hope ye can help,

    thx

    karl.

just an extra bit of info

all the inputs on the sound card are 3.5mm jack connections.

    Hopefully someone can help ??

    thx

Hooking up sound systems isn’t my thing in fact I always end up confused on this topic as well :o

But SPDIF is a means of carrying the audio signal digitally and can come in two forms coaxial and optical (also referred to as TOSLINK) both of which use different type of cables.

To further complicate matters some of Creatives Audigys have a dual function output on the back which is a 3.5mm jack but also doubles up as a digital out/in. In order to make use of the SPDIF connection you need this adapter from Creative which provides the necessary SPDIF input/outputs in coaxial and optical form.

I suspect you need that adapter if you want to make use the digital connection from the soundcard to the sound system as you say all the connections on the back of the Audigy are 3.5mm jacks. If you have the audio drive bay that comes with some of their soundcards then you shouldnt need it I think.

If you want to connect it with the analogue connections it should be straight forward just match the outputs on the Audigy 2 up to your sound system
    e.g. Font left/right , rear left/right, centre/subwoofer

There is a decent enough article on Microsofts site that covers a lot of this (actually it's to do with MCE which is why its on MS's site)
