Was watching the Shannan vs Belfast Harlequins game yeterday on TV at Thomond Park in what was a crucial game in league and there was an awful* crowd at the game.

    There is something wrong.

Its the same at any Cork Con or Dolphin game i go to.

Where are all these Munster fans? Sure aren't they they the greatest fans in the world?

    :(

It's true altho they would never let it be said ... I know some "fans" who never heard of the game 7 years ago and are only beigining to understand some of the rules !! Also over the years when I've been passing thru Limerick on occasion I've been to shannon/Garyowen/Old Crescent games where the crowd has been me , a dog , a couple of coaches and a smattering of other people. Mind you we in Leinster can't be throwing stones on this one!

Well, my club is garryowen and I go to college in Dublin, so that's a problem ;)
I miss the old days of a couple of thousand turning out for a Limerick derby, that was amazing. I think those days might be gone for good though. :(

Where are all these Munster fans? Sure aren't they they the greatest fans in the world?

They only go to games sponsored by Heineken.

BTW - why are there any Munster 'hardcore fans' without Final tickets. .they were readily avaliable up until the QF weekend !

Will you ever give it a rest? Munster beat Leinster - get over it!
Christ almighty - do we have to listen to people giving out about how people support their rugby.
In GAA I know people who wouldn't support a local club but will go to the provincial games. It's the same in Rugby.
I don't thinks any local rugby team can claim an equivalent amount of support that the provincial team gets. Look at yourselves before you start throwing stones at others.

its a simple truth as in every other game people want to see top level games.
there is no aib team close to me and to be honest I wouldnt be bothered watching one of the games on telly. I will go see my own team play in the provincial towns cup saving that the aib league doesnt interest me. the same is true in soccer, people will much rather watch a champions league game than an eircom league game. I think that is why rugby is getting so popular because we can bring top level games to belfast, dublin and limerick

WTF has that got to do with my post ? I acknowledge Munster won. . ill be in Cardiff (as a Leinster fan) supporting Munster as the Irish representatives. . I hope you finnally get your hands on the Cup.

I've asked the same question for many years. . .Leinster have a lot bandwagon jumpers, granted. . .its just a pity that some Munster fans can't sit up and admit that they also have the same problem (not all ye fans are as genuine as you might want to think).

As for why some 'hardcore' fans didnt think to shell out as little as 15 sterling for a ticket prior to the QF's - I still have no idea :confused::confused:

Well, although I do find the 'rugby tourists' annoying at times, anything that raises the profile and revenue of the game has to have advantages. And I don't have a ticket for the final this time round, because I'll be sitting an exam when the final's being played :(

I suppose Applehunter and Sheepshagger, the reason is people want to follow a winning team, whereas Leinster invariably find a way to play well below their abilities as soon as the pressure is on. Sure Munster lose games, but at least they (in their fans eyes) go down fighting (sometimes literally), Leinster regulary don't.

Now, why pick on Munster? are Munster unique in this? of course not, so why bother to post it at all, why not post a "Winning team attracts fans" thread and see how far you get?

More importantly, why aren't people asking what kind of coach goes into a game with no back-up outhalf or second row? Arrogant to the point of idiotic.

For my own part, I grew up about 30 miles from the mnearest rugby club so I grew up loving the game but only seeing the 5 Nations on TV. I therefore have no club affiliation but have accessed the sport through Munster which is fantastic.

On a bigger point, most Irish people I find are only up for the big matches. Witness the GAA where All Ireland matches are sell outs but there is only the hard core at the weekly club matches. Same for soccer - how many go to the Eirocm League games?

Poor response Dave - we all know the the amount of bandwagon jumpers is increasing year on year (along with the numbers of tickets being snapped up my the Corporates). The only way to guarantee yourself a ticket to these big games is to buy a ticket when you can. . .if you wait and rely on your SC then you risk missing out (as many people have found out now).

You can pay what 15 sterling (the cheapest tkt),whats that about 25 euro,or say 30 with the booking fee - a very small price to shell to guarantee your seat. . find it hard to believe 'hardcore' fans wouldnt stump up such a small amount of cash.

Yeah its bad form... I am half considering given my ticket to my Brother as he is a full member and has gone to every single home match and he may not get a ticket.

I somehow doubt anyone would be questioning Munster's support if they had just beaten Toulouse in the Semi-Final.

Yeah and three of them were me, my dad and my son. (all from Dublin 4, unlike most Leinster rugby players).

Down in rural Limerick for a relaxing bank-holiday weekend and felt we just had to go to Thomond Park to see what it was like.

Pretty empty really was the verdict.

The Shannon Club house is interesting to visit however. Loads of memorabilia on the walls. Prominent are pictures of all their internationals both male and female. One of the girls looked quite fit, if I may digress, and she had a most unusual name which also made her stand out from the likes of Rosie Foley, and Catriona something else. It wasn't quite Camilla Parker Bowles but it wasn't a mile away from it.

The reason why I made the above comment is because before the Munster/Leinster match no on gave a continental s**t who went to the Shannon, Garryowen, Bohs, Young Munster etc. games. But now that the Leinster supporters were critisised for their perceived lack of support, a way has to be found to belittle the Munster supporters.
Those who went to matches in Limerick over the weekend may have missed the fact that there was a festival on in the city and that alot of people go away for bank holidays which would have affected numbers.
Just to warn you all that there is little excitement and no singing and chanting at local games. The same way that there wouldn't be the same atmosphere at Rialto united (made it up) as there would be at Man utd games.
    Get real.

I think it needs to be accepted that as the sport grows, there are more and more bandwagon supporters - its just a natural progression in sport and the hype surrounding it.

Not everyone who goes to the big games will go to the small ones, its simply how it is. personally i dont care, provided i can still get tickets to the matches i'm happy. hell give it a while and some will become hardcore true fans - as i said, natural progression.

also, Crea, calm down. he raised it as a discussion topic and getting abusive will get you nowhere bout out of here. consider it a warning.

Crash - I was answering a direct question from sheepshagger.
I take it that you think I was being aggressive by using the S word. You couldn't be further from the truth. That phrase is well used and I wouldn't think the S word is that offensive or abusive.
The heading of the original post was contentious so I don't see why (Munster) people can't get a bit defensive because it.

It's unfair that only 1600 tickets are being provided to the 2000 supporters club members.
Then again look what happened to the leinster tickets when they allowed their supporters club members buy up to 4 tickets each for the semi final (amazing how many of those tickets ended up in Munster supporters hands:rolleyes: )

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,198 ✭✭✭✭Crash

yeah actually - hell it'd have been worth a munster fans cash to be a leinster supporter like :P
