Have ordered this mobo from Elara (€3 more than Komplett), as I'm sick and tired of waiting for Komplett to get it back in (after a semi-narky email from their sales staff, I should probably even reconsider purchasing the bulk of my components from them). Anyhoo, I downloaded the mobo manual and it has no mention of support for the "x2" processors. I know this board can do it, because many of ye guys have that combination of process and board at work.

Can I assume it's just a BIOS upgrade to support the new processor?. Also since this is my first build, is it just a matter of assembling the PC and booting off the motherboard CD and upgrading the bios. What exactly is the first step I suppose is my question. Or do I need to do anything other than assemble the PC, format the disk and install the OS to get a functional PC.

Appologies for the simply question, as I'm new to this neck of the woods.

It should support it out of the box. There are some issues with the board, in general it needs good quality ram. I installed one as a business machine a while ago and it would just randomly freeze, no error, nothing in sys log, I was at the stage of having to setup a debug machine for it or something. It may be solved now, I had to set the hypertransport speed from 5x to 1x. I found that solution on the asus forums, which are quite good actually. ( http://vip.asus.com I think)

There is a beta bios up, that I hope will solve issues like this when official, but were I buying again, I would definitely have gone for the A8N32-SLI for the extra €20-30, its solid as a rock for me here. I do dev work (VS, oracle, eclipse), and it never ever crashes on me since their last bios update (a couple of months ago).

    OK, would Corsair 2GB DDR XMS3200C2PT TwinX (2x1GB) CAS2 (MY-079-CS) suffice? (timings 2-3-3-6)

Can get these on overclockers for a little over €200

    Any help appreciated, Cheers

Afaik, the later BIOS revision (that the boards now ship with) support X2's out of the box.
Even if it doesn't, the CPU will still work fine, albeit it'll act as a single core CPU. If that happens, simply flash the BIOS and all will be dandy.

As for the RAM, I've the exact same RAM, and everything work's perfect.

Thank you very much for your help. It is most appreciated. I will put in the order ASAP. Also when I want to update the BIOS, just in case it doesn't arrive with the latest stable release, do I simply boot the machine and using some program I download, update the BIOS and reboot yeah?

    No probs.

The mobo wil come with a program that'll download the latest release for you and flash it, although you'll need to install the program. Alternatively, you can just go to the BIOS download section of the Asus website, and you can manually download it from there and flash it yourself.

The mobo manual will have instructions on flashing the BIOS iirc, and there'll be instructions on the website aswell.
