Help urgently needed

    hey,
    I tried to cut and paste 2 video files to my mp3 player but the paste failed and I have lost the files. On my mp3 player they show up in the browser but the filesize is 0 Bytes instead of about 700 MB. Can I recover them? BTW I'm using Ubuntu.

    Hmmm, that kinda depends. What you really need is an undelete utility. Unfortunatly you cannot undelete a file on a Linux filesystem (such as ext3), but you can on older filesystems like FAT32. If it's an MP3 player it's probably a FAT32 filesystem so undeletion should be possible. Firstly stop using the MP3 player. Don't put any files on it, or modify existing files. The more you change a FAT32 filesystem the less likely you will be able to undelete a file. That's because there's a chance that the old file will be overwritten.

    I don't know if any FAT32 undeletion programmes exist for Linux. SourceForge, FreashMeat or Google Linux will help.

    You might be able to undelete iff it's an ext2 filesystem
    and you haven't done much with it since.

    If the mp3 player can be mounted as a USB drive or similar,
    you've a good chance of getting them back.
