    Hi all,

My girlfriend is doing her masters in Trinity in Multimedia,

She lost her laptop yesterday afternoon in the library. Hasn't been able to find it.

It has all her project work (not backed up  ) and is quite valuable.

€500 cash reward if anybody can help track it down or return it.

This is really really really important.

Please PM if you can help, or know anybody who got "lucky" yesterday and found the laptop. It has 6 months work on it and she really really needs it back.

    Cheers

A description wouldn't go a miss. What make and model is it, which library was it lost in? Have you tried the library desk? Have you gone to where she was sitting yesterday and asked the people near by if they saw anyone walk off with a laptop?

Thanks for the response, sorry about the missing info.

She's talked to security and Library staff etc - no result yet.

It was the Berkley Library - She was using the Library Cataloge Computers to the right of reception.

It was at 5pm yesterday evening.

Laptop was in a black bag.

I can veryify the spec etc with anybody who's found it, that way I will know they are legit and not taking the piss.

    Thanks again.

I know its a handy one to find a nice laptop, but this is her masters etc and all her work, she really really needs it back. I've never seen her so upset.

Just think of it as you finding €500 euro instead.

    Thanks again.

Commiserations hope you find it, I once lost a €90 fountain pen in a book before (obviously not as important as a laptop but with lots of sentimental value nonetheless :( )

    Hope you get it back!

Probably should put it in the Trinity Noticeboard too:

You are very unlikely to get the laptop back.

What you should do is put up signs around the library.
The person who stole it may still have it.

They might have a heart and be willing to copy the masters project back to you.
    I'd say that's your best shot :/

My laptop got stolen from my house along with two others last week so I know exactly how you feel. Also my thesis was due in three days after it got nicked   , but luckily enough I had most of the stuff backed up.

Anyway enough about me, regarding yours the best thing to do is to put loads of signs etc up around the college explaining the situation, and outlining anonymous ways in which the person could email the info back to you. IE. set up a new email account and put it up on the signs. I'd say it's unlikely that you'll get the actual laptop back, but whoever nicked it might have the heart to forward the work from an anonymous email address if they can be assured they won't get caught. Good luck with it.

Posters are going up tomorrow morning around the library offering the €500 reward euro for anybody who found it with contact details etc.

Hopefully its enought cash to persuade somebody to give it back. €500 notes is a nice wedge plus you get good karma from helping out somebody in need :)

Any student has to be sympathetic to somebody loosing all their work for the past 6 months ( I hope !!!!)

if the laptop was stolen maliciously that data is long gone... first thing they'd do pretty much is format the thing..........

I feel for your girlfriend thats rotten. But I'm baffled how a masters multimedia student wouldn't have had a backup. Ah well. Would she have given tutors earlier versions of her work for review? Perhaps they might still have older versions etc. Hope you get it back.

Without sounding harsh, I hope this is a lesson to you all to back things up. I had several copies of my thesis on the college network, USB key, CD-R, webmail, gmail and my supervisor's email.

The laptop was lost, just trying to get somebody to return it. It is unlikely that it'll be returned but its always worth a try.

The e-mail address thing is a good idea and will deffo give it a go. But !! its XP Pro and requires a login. Doubt they'll be bothered hacking the admin password then copying the files off the disk to mail them on, as stated it'll be formatted and re-installed.

Cheers for the replies & views folks.

Can't believe there are students who would steal a laptop full of someone's important stuff, and then take 500e as if they are some kind of good samaritan for giving it back. If I found a laptop I'd hand it right to security, even though I'm in need of one right now. Whats the world coming to?

I agree its a bit suss though how someone just 'loses' a laptop, and hadn't backed anything up, especially being a multimedia student!

Believe it or not it's been recovered

Can't go into the details........ but its back !!!! All her stuff. Reward wasn't required in the end either !

A week later !! after giving up hope and everything !! :D:D:D

Don't worry everything has been now backed up onto DVD's !!!

Thanks all for feedback, posts, advice and words of encouragement etc.

He won't give you the truth now - I have exposed the delicious secret. Anything else he has to say will be an elaborate distortion of the truth.

OP - Could you or your girlfriend let the Library Staff know that the laptop has turned up? As far as I know, they're still keeping an eye out for it.

This post should maybe be in the woo hoo thread...anyway.

    a) the laptop and owner have been reunited, yay.

    b) the library staff were looking out for it, that gives me faith in the niceness of people.

... and yet, as far as I know, she still hasn't had the manners to let anybody in the Library know that the laptop has turned up.

I heard that she left it in a classroom - where it lay for an entire week before it was retrieved - yet she swore blind to Library staff that it was left beside the PC's in the Berkeley Library. Any truth to that story?

Not sure..the way i heard it one of the shelvers found it and handed to a library guard.

That was a different laptop (an apple) found by a shelver and handed in on Friday morning - reclaimed shortly afterwards.
